Topic Dog Boards / General / Border Collie: Motorbike Chasing

I have read some of your replies to other owners of Border Collies, who say that theirs have a fascination with push bikes, cars, etc... Sasha goes mad everytime that she hears a sound anything like a motorbike - that sort of high-pitched chugging sound. The trouble is, I can't distract her if she hears it before I do!! Any suggestions?

As an ex-motorcyclist I could give some suggestions you would not like! A friend of mine was killed when a dog ran out in front of him and another friend was admitted to hospital with a badly damaged kidney when another dog ran out in front of him!

Number one, NO dog should ever be near a road off of the lead!

Daniel, is she any good with her sits/downs? I've read that it's reckoned there's an addictiveness to the adrenalin rush collies get with the chase. If you can't distract her at least have her sit or lie down and don't let her lunge. That way the "high" is decreased and you may find she's more distractable in time. It also means she's completely under control and no accidents will result from a sudden lunge causing the rider to swerve.
Maybe the idea of sitting near a busy road to desensitise her would be the way to go?
JMHO
Good luck.

Hi
Thanks for that! Yes, she is good at sits/downs, so I will have a go - it sounds logical.

Daniel.
