Hi, can anyone recommend any thing for kennel cough?
I came back from LKA Sunday night and next day my 8 month old is coughing and now my 2 year old is coughing also.

Benylin Non Drowsy for dry coughs works very well.

Its most likely he had it before LKA as its 4 - 10 days incubation so I would let your friends know as he may have infected them too. Sadly its passed on before we know it.
Treat with honey and lemon in some warm water to sooth the tickle, run the shower on hot for a while and sit with him in the steamy bathroom for 10 mins a couple of times a day. NO walks and lots of rest. If you have to take him out (Though he should not have walks while he is coughing) use a harness so the collar does not aggravate his throat.
Most dogs recover in 3-5 days but if its continuing see the vet in case he has a secondary infection that needs anti-biotics.
If you go to the vet tell them first you suspect kennel though as they will not want him in a waiting room full of dogs.

I have had a lot of success with Dorwest's Garlic and Fenugreek tablets and would recommend them if the dog is mildly affected. I think that they might also be of use in a protective way if you have a lot of dogs. I found it so good that I would definitely give it to my more vulnerable dogs in the future if anyone else is coughing.

I'd have to agree that to go down with this the following day, would suggest they didn't pick this up at LKA.   We use Benelyn (much as touch wood, it's been YEARS since we've had KC around).   Vets these days are tending to prescribe antibiotics to help prevent it going to pneumonia.   And as you'll know, it's more potentially serious for the puppy and the elderly.   Most will shake it off eventually.   Please, if you do go to your vet with your dogs, keep them outside in the car until the vet is ready to see you or they'll pass it on to every dog in the waiting area - even those who have been vaccinated although they normally shake it off faster than non-vaccinated dogs.   And no local walking for now - and not for a week or so after the symptoms have stopped.

You should never give a dog anything intended for humans unless a vet says its ok, some parts of some things can have very bad effects on dog.

It's a virus, the cough is merely a symptom, you will get anti biotics from a vet.

Benylin is  fine for dogs as is honey I have also used echinacea  with success.yes it is a virus and usually needs no treat apart from symptomatic  unless as merlot says things don't improve due to a secondary bacterial infection.then abs are needed

Yes, for those who are not experienced (not using human treatment without a vet's okay) BUT I do know what I'm doing (most of the time ) and when I need a vet's input, or don't.   The viral KC can't be cured (you can't cure a virus)  as it has to run it's course.   But you can treat the symptoms and as said, vets these days are more likely to prescribe antibiotics to help prevent the KC going to pneumonia.   KC can be bacterial which obviously can be treated.
