Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / late mating??
- By littleberry [gb] Date 11.12.15 10:27 UTC
My girl was mated on the 6th and 8th of dec using our own proven stud. This is her 3rd and final litter and i hope to keep a pup for showing. For the past 2 days our boy has shown no interest in her whatsover even though she is still flagging and flirting like mad. This morning my son popped in past and unknown to me had his boy with him and within seconds i heard a yelp and he had tied with her, only for about 5 seconds, she pulled away and the tie was over but im so angry.I started to think i had maby mated her too early with my own boy but he still wants nothing to do with her where previously he was crying to get to her.Im not sure what to do,obviously i will have to dna test the litter although my sons dog is a different breed so should be able to tell but what are the chances this will be a mixed litter,im devastated!

I would think the chances of it being a mixed litter would be quite high, but if your sons dog is a different breed why would you need to DNA test the litter?

Won't it be obvious which (if any) of the pups are cross breed?

What's done is done, accidents happen to the best of us, hope it all turns out well for you x

Not necessarily!   I've seen the result of mix breeding with my main breed involved (too many times!) and as puppies they almost always favour my breed in looks.   Up to you whether you DNA test or not, but basically what your son allowed to happen, even if common sense should have had your bitch in a separate area to the end of her season, has pretty much stuffed selling any of them as purebred, let alone registering them although I guess if the UK KC will allow registration, after DNA testing, from a litter by two different sires now, you may be able to do so with a litter from the same breed, and not the same breed!   You'd have to enquire.

I agree you may not immediately know if they are cross breeds.
I know someone who thought they had a litter of white boxers only to find spots growing by the day..yes neighbours dog was a Dalmatian!

No problem registering the litter once DNA tested.

Regardless of what they look like as pups I would DNA test the pups, for your peace of mind. Fingers crossed you'll have a full purebred litter.
I've know a few people have their bitches mate with a dog of a different breed after they had been mated with a stud dog of the correct breed - they've always ended up with a full crossbred litter
