My 1 year old Springer Sp./Black Lab likes to steal socks off of the
floor when the bedroom door is open. And also steal kleenex out of the trash can when no one is looking. It was suggested to me by a trainer that i go on the net and find a recipe for a tatse deterant to spay on these things so she won't associate them with a fun activity anymore. Anyone have any ideas or a recipe i could try????

my f/c puppy like's tissue and tea towels, duster, and will pick up anything that is laying around,so that my fault and your if you leave thing on the floor, your dog and my puppy breeds are naturel retrievering dog so they like to carry things in their mouths, and as you say it a fun activity,so it a game to them and a learn lesson,i am not get cross with chase if he dose is as we want he to retriever later in life,so if he as collected a iterm i call him and make him sit and say to him give and he dose then i give him a treat, for giving it to me,
i would not use deterant beacuse of the side affects just praise and putting things away that i know he should not have,

My Malamute is now 14 months old and will always pinch a tissue or sock if they are within reach ....we try to make sure he CAN'T reach any :) If he gets something , we tend to sit down quietly and call him to us ...it can take a while ...but when he DOES , we tell him to leave it and then praise like mad when he drops the offending item :)

Pup is the same . We try not to chase him to get the things back because we are then making it into a fun chase game for him . Just keeo calling him and get him to drop - and like Melody says praise him loads when he does drop

my dog loves a tissue and always nicks socks, infact every now and then i have to go out into the garden and retrieve the pile of socks that has accumulated under a bush the dog uses. There is a deterant spray you can get from the pet shop which i usually spray on things ive caught her chewing like telephone wires or chair legs and it works, but while your spraying your socks or tissues you might just as well pick them up instead.

Bitter apple works wonders on just about everything, and the best part about it is that you don't have to constantly spray it. Try spraying a couple of socks laying around. The dog won't like the taste and will learn that socks don't taste well. Bitter apple is very harmless and can be found at most petstores.

Have to say that Hudson LOVES the taste of Bitter Apples :( .......however , WE loathe it ..the times Ive put my fingers in my mouth after touching something that we have sprayed with the stuff and then spent the next 20 minutes trying to get rid of the taste :D

Snap Melody. It reminds me of the stuff I used when younger to stop biting my nails, but Saffy didn't even seem to notice it!!! She steals socks and tissues and has become expert at lifting the pedal bin lid to get whatever is lurking in there. We just keep as much out of her reach as poss and put something heavy on the bin!!
