OK kids, sorry to be a boring old fart but what the hell is Black Friday?  Genuinely don't know what it means.

A lot of UK companies haven't done it this year after the almost riots in asda last year  That and apparently companies cant guarantee items bought online will be delivered before xmas so they haven't bothered.

Whats going to be the next fad from America ? Halloween is another from across the pond. Next you know we'll be told we should celebrate thanks giving day:lol:

In the US it is the day after Thanksgiving, with lots of big sales starting already at midnight. Like they say -they have Thanksgiving when they give thanks for all they have, then as soon as the next day arrives they go mad shopping for what they haven't got.

Yes, its quite new & up until a couple of years ago, I hadn't heard of it either. As other have said something else we seemed to have 'taken on' from America!!

Don't know why it's become such a big thing. How much discount would you need off a TV to warrent punching someone in the face?! They fight for items and everything! The discounts here are only like 20%!

Don't think we're allowed to post links anymore (can't remember) but put Oxford Street black Friday 2015, into YouTube search Jean & see what you missed.

It's an event I don't participate in Black Friday sale events. After the chaos last year people fighting over tv's and other non essential  items I vowed not to. Cyber Monday thou yes re online shopping a simple click, pay and in the comfort of my own home.
For us Boxing Day used to be the sale day! With Christmas over a 4 day weekend it will be carnage at the food stores and the usual rubbish being sold off half price.

We went shopping in our local tescos today wondering if that was a wise thing to do after the riots at some tesco branches last year, not ours though. It wasn't particularly busy, but there were huge tv's at, allegedly, massively reduced prices. Everyone seemed to be walking round them to get on with the rest of their shopping. However we've had dozens and dozens of emails fom online stores shouting about fantastic savings to be had on their Black Friday sales. ( Interesting, the ipad automatically capitalised Black Friday).

Quite honestly I find the whole thing one big yawn and we haven't bought a thing.

Amazon have got their week of Black Fridays deals. Have kept an eye on some of them for Xmas presents. Thought ooh that's not bad, so went onto the actual website for the items to see what they are charging and you know what, sale price and that's their normal price.. Lol
So not always a good deal tbh

I think you are right, it's just a big fat con. I hate shopping anyway so I don't feel I have missed out.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.11.15 23:02 UTC
I mostly shop on-line except for groceries

Thanks for that Lacy.  I now know that Black Friday would hold no interest for me.

I will never moan about the crowds at Crufts again.

There was a big push for Buy Nothing Friday this year, with it not being a UK thing, and plenty of people did exactly that.  Empty shopping centres all over the place.  Brilliant!
- By saxonjus Date 02.12.15 08:39 UTC
Most stores at the big shopping centre by me had 4 day black day sales! I buy now pj's,dressing gowns in January for half the price! I give an IOU note wrapped up in a Terry choc orange! Fed up of paying top price and then it's half price a week later.
I'm waiting for the food queues as Christmas over four day space with the weekend and bank holiday!  All those trollies heaving with stuff that we don't usually eat and probably be thrown away untouched!

It's an 'American' thing - a sales ploy to get people to buy.  Yes there are bargains to be had, but basically I'm not so sure they ARE bargains (perhaps that's the cynic in me).    This year, after virtual riots last year, people have stayed away - although I gather online sales have been up.

When I used to work for a well known store we knew twice a year Boxing day sales and Summer sales we would get truck loads of rubbish from other branches! We used to empty our old stock from the warehouse and pack off to other stores. Loads used to have to be brushed from the dust! Plus we used to see the same tired tat left after each sale back in the next!
A lot of sales stuff are past stock and can be labelled as cheaper because they have been at a higher price in a different branch.
