Topic Dog Boards / Health / Testicle Question.

I am looking for opinions, experiences, and reassurance whatever it may be. I have an eight week and five day old puppy. He is the pick of the litter, there is literally nothing wrong about him, and he has temperament tested as classic show dog and basically stands on a table like he’d been doing this his entire life. The only thing is both myself and the sire’s father have only found one testicle on him so I was beginning to think it was time to cut my loses and place him in a pet home and move on. This is an issue that is common in our breed and I am mindful of that.

So I took him into the vet for his eight week exam and wellness check ---as I was speaking to my vet about my concern about him that we’ve only felt one testicle on him she looks up completely confused and goes “he’s not cryptorchid he has both testicles” and I am in utter shock. I mean I called her back after I left because I don’t think I completely retained that knowledge. What she said was that both testicles are past the inguinal ring and they will come down, the one testicle is just not in the scrotum yet but she says they will come down.

So as anyone had experiences like that? Is it worth holding onto him for a little bit to see if the testicles will go where they need to go, or should I pet him now and not get attached to him.

Please stop testing your puppy, a friend sent an entire 15 week old puppy to Sweden, the new owner checked the dog every day & he ended up withdrawing one testicle permanently.

I have a 10 year old dog who as a puppy had testicles that yoyo'd up & down on an almost daily basis, I was advised by a very young vet that he only has one descended testicle & should be castrated PDQ. Good job I was not a novice owner, both his descended permanently when he had all his adult teeth & are still where they should be

Testicles can pop up and down for months so if the vet has felt both I wouldn't worry and I know you want to keep checking but leave well alone!

Given his age now, I'd not panic by any means even if this is known in your breed.   I prefer to see both down by 10 weeks, BUT puppies can bring them down, and 'retract' them when you mess around with them!!    It not unknown for a puppy, at 6 months, to go into the ring with all present and correct, only to find on examination they are not!    How embarrassing is that, all round.  :red:

It's up to you whether or not you home him (bearing in mind you must warn the owners as he'll need to have an operation to go in and find the 'missing one', to be removed as a retained testicle can become cancerous.    As I'm used to running on mine, for some months (Bassets eh), if you want a good show dog, and he's already looking like a good one, I'd not let him go just yet.   Whether or not you 'get attached' to him!!

Checking your other answers now - absolutely at the moment LEAVE HIM ALONE.
