when stud dog has mated a bitch does anyone give him a pick me up?  dog is 10 so was wondering if he should have anything after mating?

If he's fit enough to do the job, he surely shouldn't need a pick me up?

I might be a tad concerned to be using a dog of that age, depending on breed - in some 10 isn't that old but in my main breed, it is getting up there!!

I think it's great to use older dogs if you can. You know they've made old bones and will also probably have more of an idea about any progeny they've already produced.

Not sure I'd give anything extra to him though.

The dog I used in Spring, my Ridl's dad was 9 1/2, and he has just mated a bitch I bred at 10 and 3 months, though this is likely to be his last hurrah.  He has veteran offspring, one of whom I plan to use for my next litter.

In my breed we tend to use dogs up to around 9, or when they start missing, but most males in my breed are used very rarely and a half dozen litters in a lifetime is a well used dog.

There is something in the saying use it or loose it.

Could be worth considering in terms of longevity, but that should be obvious if research into the bloodlines is done and as for previous progeny - it takes two to tango so even if he's produced well before, put to another bitch may not produce the same (good) results.   I'm thinking the down side to using a dog of 10 + is the sperm may not be quite as viable.   Depending on the breed and how long they normally live for.   With my main breed, 10 would be elderly and I'd not use one that old.
