Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Short tie

Hi, I'm new to posting but have been around a while reading posts, we are currently wanting to breed my girl who is on day 14 today, we have had 2 matings on day 10 and day 13 both achieved a tie which the girl was extreamly vocal throughout (she a very vocal bitch on a normal day) but the tie has only lasted 8 minutes first and 6 minutes for the second,
Is there any reason for such a short tie? Is she still likely to take from one? Sorry for the question just I've generally known much longer ties and just a bit worried, thanks

Length of tie is irrelevant, a tie shows that the goods have been delivered, where as with a slip mating there is always some doubt, but even a slip that lasts at least a minute of the ladder climbing usually shows a 'deposit' has occurred.

The tie causes a vacuum and that and the contractions you see in the bitch help facilitate the sperm reaching the right place.

As for length of tie, it is all down to how soon the dog looses his erection and the bitches muscles relax.

Barbara, is there a possibility it might be too early and that's why the bitch was so vocal??

One of my breeds almost always screams blue murder when they tie. Worried me a lot the first time but my mentor assured me it's common in the breed and since then I've seen it most times. My other breed I've never seen it with. If a tie happens naturally with no forcing of the bitch involved I would therefore not worry about screaming, but if the bitch was held still and not given the option to object then it may well have been the wrong day.

As said, the length of the tie doesn't matter.   And even with slip ties, provided the bitch is right on, and the male viable, a pregnancy should occur.   One of my stud dogs never managed a tie but he only missed to one of the bitches I let him be used on (probably no more than half a dozen).   She came back to my other male, nect season, had a couple of good matings, and missed again. ..... taken to another male in another kennel, on her next season, she again missed.   At which point her owner packed it in with her.    With his slips, we'd upend the bitch for a little while to allow (we hoped!) the semen to get where it was needed.

Breeders prefer to see a tie, however long for, but it's not necessarily necessary

Oh and one of my bitches was vocal during the mating, and again on whelping.   There was really no reason for this - it was just her and further, she'd have nothing to do with their poohing (peeing fine, but the other) which was left to me to sort out.   She only had the one litter - 2 of which we kept!

Hetty made a hell of a racket as the tie started both times, making me fear for the noise she might make during whelping - but she barely even moaned. :-)

Many bitches find the tie uncomfortable/strange, as the male doesn't become fully erect until after penetration.

In our breed matings are supervised but not often much hands (maybe a steadying hand) until the dog turns when it's wise to be on hand in case you have a bitch (like one of mien) whom likes to turn turtle.

I have had screamers who were more than willing to have another go as son as the tie ended, so not a sign of any reluctance

Hi thank you for replies think I'm just worrying as realy want this litter, both the bitch and the dog were willing and we didn't step in until the male went to turn which is when my girl became vocal, she is a maiden so maybe just a bit shocked
