Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Providing ID before using a stud.

Hi All

I have recently used a local stud, but before i was give the owner address i was asked to provide photo id via email/text to prove who i was basically. I  thought about if for a while thinking do i or dont i. but the more i thought about it i thought its a good idea i spoken at length with the breeder at her property and ask why they ask for ID, they said it was for security reasons as you never know who is walking through the door and that most genuine people would not have a problem providing ID before visiting

Has anyone else had a similar request or have themselves requested ID

I am thinking of doing the same in the future with my stud or future home for my pups

I think it's an excellent idea and have done something similar in the past with someone who was interested in a litter my dog had sired and they wanted to meet the sire, we met in a local pub....they were 100% genuine.

What sad times we live in if this is necessary!    I have to say that nobody I didn't know approached me for one of my studs however, not that if they had, I'd have been doing my own homework, basically re the background of the bitch before agreeing.   My dogs were 'at stud to approved bitches only'.   And that meant if, having checked, I didn't think the bitch would nick with my male(s), and even more I'd need to see the bitch (never mind the owners), then I declined the enquiry.   All stud owners are 50% reponsible for what their studs might sire - and of course, it's ALWAYS the fault of the stud dog if the unexpected turns up

I understand how people might feel re strangers walking in, and I guess in some breeds taking precautions might be more and more necessary but again it's a sad reflection of how things are, if this has to be asked for.

When it comes to selling my puppies, I'd not risk asking for ID.   Too easy to be accused to abusing Human Rights - I went by the pricking of my fingers in terms of whether or not I felt the people were okay to have one of my precious puppies!

"......and have done something similar in the past with someone who was interested in a litter my dog had sired and they wanted to meet the sire, we met in a local pub....they were 100% genuine. "

I'm not sure I'd want to be involved in something like that - I would be willing to take my dog to the owner of the litter, maybe.   Most breeders who use outside stud dogs, have a photo of the stud dog they use which for most people should be sufficient - and if your dog is being shown, as mine were, he should be 'known' without needing to meet up with somebody interested in seeing him because he'd sired a litter...?   The contract is between breeder (of the litter) and her prospective owners.   Surely?

its not the background of the dogs it more the owners if the visitor asks for the address of the stud owner or puppy owner and then decides against using the stud or purchasing a puppy then that person has your full address. so a stranger you have never met and only had a conversation with at best knows you have a house full of potential expensive dogs.

I have seen myself on another pet website owners offering rewards for stolen dogs

I can sort of understanding why, given the increased frequency of people getting beaten in their own homes whilst someone walks off with their puppies/ dogs etc, but never something I have done, or felt like I needed to ask. However, the majority of interest tends to come from friends or friends of friends etc, so rarely do people come to you (in this breed) who is completely unknown.

Have never used a dog of someone I was not already well acquainted with, except when I went abroad to use a dog (and I was staying with the stud owners with my bitch, but normally the bitch ahs stayed with the stud) and I had already had extensive social internet contact.

By the time I wanted to sue any dogs I would expect to me well acquainted with the person for some time before.  After all you will have exchanged all sorts of information about your respective lines photos, etc.

I have working Gundog studs and due to them being top of the list for theft, I scrutinise every bitch owner thourghly  before giving out my address.

Again, what a sad reflection of the times in which we live.   But I would just add if I knew nothing about either people or their dogs, this would red flag the whole enqiury, right there.   Isn't what you suggest, taking 'casing the joint' to another level

Ditto. I've turned down enquiries for both my breeds due to not knowing the people. I would not be able to sleep at night if I allowed one of my dogs to mate a bitch whose owner I did not already know, or had at least been recommended to me by somebody I trust. I would forever worry about what would happen to the puppies, and grandpuppies etc.
