Had my boy in for a retained testicle op today but they couldn't find the missing one. Vet is talking about a referral for a ultra scan to locate it. She has told me this could cost 1000's !!!!!!! I can't quite get my head around this? It maybe she was including the price of the resulting surgery but even so.
The operation today was only just over £200, surely it shouldn't be much more than that? Obviously it needs to be done but I am wondering how precise an ultra scan would be at locating the testicle? She also said it maybe that he only ever had the one but that would be very unusual. A blood test done in a couple of months would show if this was the case as there would be no testosterone levels in his body?
Any advice/ experinces gratefully received and no my insurance wont pay for it

If it was me I would wait and see what the blood test results are then decide as vets are very good at jumping in too quick. I am surprised an ultra sound would cost that anyway.

turns out it is for an MRI scan and apparently it may not pick it up. I am leaning towards blood test.

I think I would wait for the blood test result. I was offered an MRI scan on my dog's leg and quoted £3000. Can they not do an ultra sound scan that would probably find it if it's there. I know round our way there is a place that you can be referred to have it done.

I could have the ultra scan but that seems to be something done before they go in. Again unless it is in an obvious place, and it clearly isn't, it probably will not show up.

A good unltasonographer should be able to locate it.

Given the above advice by a good friend when one of ours was cryptorchid as she'd been working with a dog at the time who'd been operated on for retained testicles & although rare turned out he didn't have any.

I think I will go down the route of an ultrascan next year and maybe the blood test. His is only 18 months so not big rush and he needs some time to recover from this little lot.

Mine had a retained testicle which was found on castration in his abdomen dint do any tests at all. The only risk is if left long term it could.become . I can see that if you do not intend to castrate and why should u you may need to k ow if there is another to remove but nit sure how the measuring testimony works as if he has one testicle tester one will be present anyway amd of low does. That mean only one or just a low blood result.slightly confused why vet is asking u to do all.this .

He had the normal one removed so if a blood test next year showed testosterone then he would have one still inside. Although I am not sure the reverse would be true .

Now I get it.

That's a shame.i was able to get it due to r the risk of cancer
Not sure how the vet worded it but maybe you could speak to him as it woudl be his recommendation for health reasons the dog had to have the treatment so it's not castration as.the first would.have been
Worth a try.aftrr all the theory is if it be e cancerous theu woudl have a claim them
