Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hernias after neutering
- By lkj [gb] Date 19.10.15 06:29 UTC
Before I post my question on this forum I always do my research first but the information I read never tells me what I really want to know.  I had my dog neutered last week.  This is my fifth one over the years and the previous one was two years ago by the same vet.  So I'm able to make comparisons.  This is the only time over all the years that I've been told to keep my dog in for two weeks and when I go in the garden to keep her on a lead because of hernias developing by leaping around.
As I say I'm able to compare with other operations and I find this time she looks like she has been butchered by a blunt pair of scissors.  She has a hard lump.  My question is what does a hernia feel like? Pictures show hernias to look like a chickens egg in size and shape.  Hers doesn't.  Has anyone had experience of this?

Not particularly with lumpy bits, but my vets have always said to keep the dog quiet for the first few days and then to lead walk only for approx two weeks. Isla was so quickly back to normal that after a few days I allowed her to run about a bit more on the flexi lead, but kept her onlead until just a day or two before the two week period.

I recently had one of mine spayed . it was laproscopic not standard but have others spayed buy standard spay. this time as with others I was told to keep her quite ( haha this is a flat coat they don't do quiet) and lead walk for 10 days.) exaclt the ame as standard spay.
never heard anything about possible hernias although I guess if the internal stiches gave way it would produce a hernia as the intestines etc could poke through the space  . Fairly uncommon I would have thought for an experienced vet.after spaying it is not unusual I have found to temporarily get lumpy scar tissue around the wound sites. hernias a tend to be softer and can  be easily be pushed back in to place.
if you are worried take back to the vet for a check

Thank you for your reply furriefriends.  I think it may be scar tissue.   I think she mentioned hernias as my dog is triple lively compared to the others.  I'm disappointed with the scar tissue though.

Could you ask vet why the scar tissue appears lumpy? Maybe in time it will look a little better?

I hate going to the doctors and I hate going to the vets.  I don't know if it was on this forum or not but I read that it took 14 months for the thick scar tissue to disappear on their dog.   I'll ask next time I go.

I've had dozens of bitches spayed (I don't do any other than "normal" spay.)

I have never been told anything about possible hernias.  But always told lead walking only for 10 days.  However I had a hernia appear a couple of weeks after a spay 2 years ago.

The vet told me that it was nothing to do with the operation.  But he would operate on the hernia for free!

IME, the wound site can be very lumpy indeed for a short while but over time, it smooths out beautifully.  Only on one of my girls could I easily find her scar and her op was trickier than most, so she had a larger wound.  It may look bad now, but it should settle down.
