> why was she on antibiotics?
Some years ago, owners of stud dogs started asking that visiting bitches be put on a broad spectrum antibiotic - however, when I asked my vet at the time, she said what for - your bitch(es) is perfectly healthy!! She didn't prescribe me anything. And that was actually quite right! I was allowed to use that stud dog

As for going out of season quickly (except they are not really!) when mine had been successfully mated, this was one thing they usually tended to do. However I had one who shortly after having two good matings (on days 11 and 13 as I remember) came back into a blood coloured discharge through the final week. So much so that although I wasn't worried about her medically, I thought she's never taken! Her pregnancy was uneventful and she produced 9 of what was the best litter I'd ever produced, so good that we kept 3 of them, brought them, with 4 others, back to the UK when we came 'home' and the two bitches both qualified for their Stud Book numbers, one gaining her UK title. The male's bite went edge to edge by the time he came out of quarantine, so I couldn't show him seriously (scissor bites only in my breed). I did let another breeder use him, knowing about his fault and she had 2 litters from him, all good and he's now back of a number of hounds in the UK, including my current buy-in.
