I didn't think that Newfies needed any clipping or trimming for the show ring (apart from maybe around the feet to tidy them up), just a good grooming. I'm probably wrong as Newfies aren't my breed.

Are you sure that the books you were reading werent American becuase they have totally different ideas of presentation to the UK and the majority of breeds have a lot more trimming done on them than here in the UK

Newfs in the States (and in Canada to the best of my recollection) are simply 'cleaned' up, i.e., feet trimmed, scraggly feathering tapered and, in some cases, whiskers removed. I'm in a quandry as to how Newfs are 'clipped'.

Newfoundlands Today by Hedd and Del Richards has an excellent section on grooming. You can get it from amazon.co.uk. There is a divide in the Newfie world at the moment on clipping for the show ring. A few of the top kennels are clipping in the American style - cutting all over to give an even, almost sculpted look with no hair out of place. The majority of Newfie exhibitors trim naturally:
* tidy the feet - thin out hair growing in between toes with thinning scissors and do the edges of the feet with straight edge scissors
* trim edges of ears to show the line of the ear
* lightly thin out behind the ears
* tidy up any straggly hair underneath which affects the outline of the dog - similarly with feathers etc - but trim lightly
* thin lightly the hair under the chin/chest
The emphasis is on light and natural so unless you're into the American style go easy on the scissors - use thinning scissors rather than straight edge.
