Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / book recommendations for breeders?
- By rabid [je] Date 07.10.15 11:12 UTC
Can anyone recommend some books to read?

I already have:

Book of the Bitch
Breeding a Litter - Beth J Finder Harris
Canine Reproduction - The Breeder's Guide - Phyllis A Holst
The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies - Muriel P Lee

Any other recommendations??

What about a breed specific book as most have some peculiarities specific to their breed ?
I have found that there are usually quite a few "fluffy" breed books but most breeds have at least one written by someone who actually knows the breed :lol::lol:

A real treasure, but in German, I'm afraid (maybe no problem for some of you here?) is:

"Die Technik der Hundezucht" by Dieter Fleig.  This is the bible around here, even though the book is old (1960's).

I also have:

"Successful Dog Breeding" by Chris Walkowicz and Bonnie Wilcox
"Dog Breeding, The Theory and the Practice" by Frank Jackson
"Veterinary Notes for Dog Breeders" by Annette M. Carricato
"Canine Reproduction - The Breeder's Guide" by Phyllis A. Holst (as you mention)

You can get the German book in English it is called 'the technique of breeding better Dogs' by Dr Dieter Fleig. I got my copy from Amazon.

I also have 'The complete book of dog breeding' by Dan Rice, DVM, this is ok too.

As well of course the 'Book of the bitch' and 'the whelping and rearing of puppies' by Muriel P Lee - both of which are read and re-read and never leave my side when I am expecting a litter! Not to mention numerous books on my breed.

I shall be having a look at the others as the more information the better!

I'd go for a 'breed specific' book too, if you can get your hands on one.

Years ago there was a good book by Hillary Harmer - Dogs and how to Breed Them which I bought, but which to be honest, scared me to death

Great, I will get that book in English as I don't think my ancient GCSE German is quite up to it!

It is comforting for me to know that there are others out there who get "scared to death" by reading all the books and the stuff (including the horror stories) on the internet.  It seems to me that the longer I breed and the more I know (about all the things which "could" go wrong), the scarier it gets.  So why do we do it?  I guess, as I read somewhere yesterday, written by a breeder of over 40 years experience:  "There is nothing more exciting than a new litter on the way!"

It's true although I have to say that although I loved 'doing puppies' once they arrived, it was more likely that once those I'd kept back reached a year, was when I heaved a sign of relief.

hen, thanks loads for the recommendation of 'The Technique of Breeding Better Dogs' - I got a copy for just £3 from Abebooks secondhand, and it is brilliant.  It has so much more information on the actual mating process than the other books I have (which tend to focus on birth and puppy rearing).  It's just what I need, at this stage :)
