I know there are endless posts on here about panacur but I just want to ask myself. The daily dosing from day 40, is this really necessary. I'm so scared to give it incase it has a bad effect. I just can't decide. My vet says it's my choice.

I am new here (as of today), so hello to all.  Hope I do things right! ...

Panacur is a pet peeve of mine.  I'll never be able to prove it, but I truly believe it nearly killed two puppies of mine at the age of about 3 weeks.  They stopped nursing and were fading fast.  I got the baby milk into them, along with Nutrical and goat colostrum powder, and they made it!

But I stay miles away from Panacur.  I worm my puppies (Coton de Tuléar) every two weeks, usually with a different product each time:  Welpan, Banminth, Milbemax.  In case you've never heard of those, that would be because I live in Switzerland. 

I use Milbemax. No other reason than that's what the vet gave me for my first litter when I had no knowledge of why people use the Panacur routine and the pups were healthy and thriving so I have continued to use it.

I've used Milbermax on my dog for the last two years, she had a reaction to Panacur and Drontal. The breeders used both of them on the pups and had no obvious problems, but I've decided to steer clear and stick with Milbermax for now, may try the others at a later time.

Have bred 22 litters inn 20 years of 7 generations, using Panacur 10% suspension daily from 6 weeks in whelp to 2 days post whelping with no issues.

The resulting puppies in first generations have lived up to 15 1/2 years with rarely a trip to the vet.

I have used Panacur on pregnant bitches and have never had a problem.....although I do use drontal on the pups for their routine wormer.

I have also wormed bitches that I know I am mating when they come in season so have never done the panacur course from 40 days and all has been fine too.

Tbh I think it's personal preference.

the reason for using Panacur in pregnancy is to reduce by up to 98% the transfer of encysted worm larva from the bitch via placenta and milk. 

This way the pups are born with virtually no worms, giving them a much better start in life.

It is not really for treating worms in the bitch which should be done before mating using your wormer of choice.

Panacur also deals with much younger larval stages of the worms, which means it only needs giving monthly after 8 weeks as opposed to two wekly as with some other wormers.

Puppies need to be wormed regularly until 6 months as they (and bitches in late pregnancy and nursing) are the main reservoir for toxocara Canis..

Always use panacur - safe proven effective

Yes, it's necessary.     And don't be scared.  You can't get much smaller than my breed and I have always used Panacur on my pregnant bitches.  It is actually recommended for them.  And it is only a quarter of an adult dose that you are giving each day.  The pups are used to Panacur before they are born, can't be a bad thing. 

You have to remember that this drug has been tested and tested prior to being available to us.  It has been tested to a very high dose rate with no ill effects.  For anyone lurking can I just say that I won't have Milbemax in the house as I have Collies.

Last night I woke with her digging. No idea what she was digging for there were no bones etc & she never does that. Is this normal? I no it is later on in the pregnancy but she's only day 43 ish

Mine have several hidey holes prepared before they actually whelp.
Latest litter WAS to have been under a chest of drawers if my girl had her way.

Digging can still go on in earnest after the litter is born and especially if the bitch feels threatened in any way...visitors etc.
....In the minds of many good mothers Plan B is often ready just in case....

I've used Panacur for decades too.....a very safe product.

I remembered to get the Panacur from the vet, but I'd completely forgotten that it says to give it right through till 2 days post whelping, which startled me. I had in the back of my mind 3 days, but that's what you do with the puppies isn't it. Another re-reading of the Book of the Bitch to do, I think - I'm so rusty as it's 5 years since I had a litter! I only got a little tub with my bottle of Panacur which is useless for the small doses for my breed, luckily I had syringes in my whelping kit!

I have a very diggy bitch who dug through the second half of her pregnancy and 3 years later still takes the odd fit of digging.

Her daughter is due to whelp at any moment and has made one or two half hearted attempts at digging She is a more easy going bitch though than her mum. She is in no rush to get started either, I'm at the stage where I'm going to tear my hair out if she doesn't get moving soon!

It makes us into more patient people...lol

Was very bizarre she must of woke up & just started digging in my room I woke with her doing it about 1am.

Thanks ladies, she's 66 days from first mating and 64 days from second so I was planning to consult the vet this afternoon, but we now have a temperature of 36.9, a bit more enthusiastic digging, a sad expression and some lovely runny poos, so I guess thunderbirds are go :)

Wouldn't it be nice if she would move on quickly and get finished up before the vets closes No chance!!
