Anyone on this forum using windows 10?
- By saxonjus Date 05.10.15 07:40 UTC Edited 06.10.15 10:02 UTC
Window's  10 a nightmare  at first! The laptop after uploading last wifi location and settings. Had take to our expert who fixed it and said will look at it again for us and maybe suggest more memory to add.

Windows 10. Hubby, who knows his way round a PC, has sent off for a book on windows 10. He likes it and finds it much better then the previous version which he didn't update to, but it is somewhat different and feels there's more to it, hence the book.

Me? Well I'm sticking to the iPad. I only got one about three years ago after using PC's for years, much prefer Apple as on operating system especially the iPad which is just so intuitive.

W.10   Yes I loaded it, against my better judgement   I had W.7 and was quite content with it but a new IT man persuaded me to go for W10.   Big mistake.   It took 4 hours to load (possibly my slow(er) connection had to do with that) and although at first I thought it was all good, interesting, frankly problems started up from the Kaspersky I was also persuaded to load, to various other things.   So I opted out, reinstalled W7 which resulted in my mouse/curser freezing.   At which point, after screaming (like cars, computers are find when working and a nightmare when not), I took my computer (desk top) into town and got him to sort it all out.   He did, and deleted W.7 before reinstalling it.    Thank goodness, touch everything, it's all working fine again other than a constant bugging from W.10 to instal it.   'Fraid not, unless I absolutely have to.

Have windows 8.1 at the moment & I'll be glad when eventually upgrade to 10, to get rid of those irritating 'charms', whose idea was that? But with my illiterate level of skills have been advised to let any problems be sorted out (have 12 month option) before I do.
- By saxonjus Date 05.10.15 15:59 UTC
It's smarter windows 10 however teething problems with it. Our it go to man advised add more memory! A few people have taken it off their laptop as found it a nuisance however  some love it.

I know this sounds selfish but I'm glad others are having problems with Windows 10.  It was my fault when it asked "do you want to put all your e-mails together" and I said yes. I've lost all Windows 7 e-mails and Windows 10 e-mails are confusing. I'm going to persevere.  The other problem is Windows 10 won't accept Norton so have been advised to use Google for safety.
- By Goldmali Date 05.10.15 20:09 UTC

That's not correct. Norton was configured to work with Windows 10 before it became widely available, and anyone using Norton had a message to say so. I'm using Windows 10 with Norton 360.
- By lkj [gb] Date 06.10.15 05:41 UTC
I bought my Norton product on 1/7/15.  Nowhere on packet or receipt does it state 360 so I must have bought the wrong one. Just read on the 'very' small print with magnifying glass and bright light windows 8, 7, and XP.   I'll go back to Curry's today!!  Thank you Goldmali.  Do you have any problems with the email?   It's obvious from my posting I'm a computer numbskull.
- By lkj [gb] Date 06.10.15 10:40 UTC
I went to Currys who said my product should work fine.  I went on the chat line at Norton.   Everything is working fine it's just the Norton tool bar that is missing.  What an idiot I am.
- By Honeymoonbeam [gb] Date 08.10.15 20:37 UTC
I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 after hearing a recommendation.  24 hours later I reverted to Windows 7.  2 more weeks down the line I´ve re-downloaded Windows 10 and I´m making myself get on with it.  Main problem at the moment seem to be when I used Google Chrome as it keeps freezing.  No other problems, it´s just a case of getting used to it.
- By lkj [gb] Date 09.10.15 08:37 UTC
Hello honeymoonbeam, how are you getting on with your e-mails?
- By Hethspaw [gb] Date 09.10.15 18:32 UTC Edited 09.10.15 18:35 UTC
I have it, not had any 'user' probs but that might be because because I have not yet used software which might have probs.

quote -" I used Google Chrome as it keeps freezing."

I have used it, im using it now, have uploaded to youtube with it, so far i have had no probs

A problem which might occurre with many software products is that they have not upgraded their software to windows 10 satisfactoraly.

I have no problems with e-mails.  I have gmail and Hotmail e-mail addresses - both fine.

There might be a problem (or not) with some of the older, lower spec, intel processors, I have 4gb 64 bit & so far i am having no probs, not sure/don't know what minimum spec 10 is supposed to need, maybe that could be checked if anyone is having some prob or other.

Just  to add, i do do quite a bit of my own stuff with graphics & graphics really does seem to use quite a lot of gb & can be very slow indeed if PC is running below spec...so far I have had no probs. On the other side I have not found anything which 10 makes better or whatever 'improvments' it's supposed to have.

I only went with windows 10 because it said it would transfer everything over and I believed it! It did what it said, although it 'hid' the thousands of photographs that I had stored on my PC and it took me several hours to track them down again! The upshot is that I can not download photo's directly from my Nikon now and have to download them to my laptop and then put them on a stick and transfer them to my PC. Any idea's how I can get it set up so that I can download photo's directly from my camera again please? It has also hidden my WiFi, so if anyone knows where I can locate that, please say!

Now you mention that i remember i had difficulty finding how to get them off my canon, i found that accessing the system hard drives icons the camera icon comes up when its connected & i can access all images by exploring that - i since found an easier/quicker way but cant describe it beyond gobledgook, incidentally, i use an early 2008, 7mp canon so its no swish swave up to date thing.

Last night Windows 10 "lost" all my photos.  Despite my best efforts over a considerable amount of time, I couldn´t find them so I have reverted to Windows 7 and now everything is back to normal.

Last night Windows 10 "lost" all my photos.

Well thats a real shame, a fraction of a sec frozen in time can never be reproduced.

Personally & since i went digi cam (Nov 2007) I have backed everything of personal importance (only) up, immediatly after downloading, on an external hard drive, toshiba or any reputable one will do,

Externals

Another useful thing folks can do is turn their old or recent still photos into video form, mixed with other things as prefered or not, they can be put on DVD if wanted.

Last week on local radio there was a techno expert who was recommending not to upgrade to 10 for a couple of months until various bugs had been sorted.
- By Cava14Una Date 14.10.15 06:49 UTC
That's what I usually do, worked fine so far:smile:

Its the same with all products, the first model/version comes out after some controled & confined testing my manufacturer, then in the wider world of the ordinary consumer shortcomings start to show - at that point the manufacturers modify the product & come out with the 'Mark 2' & that sort of thing.

This is what I'd go with ...... nothing will persuade me to try W 10 again, unless I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO!

The only reason I am on it is because a non fake microsoft pop up message came through offering it for free, so i simply got it - I have had no problems with it but I can't see any advantages either, it's certainly not something worth buying, not that I've so far noticed, if what people have already then no point in bothering with 10, IMO.

> The only reason I am on it is because a non fake microsoft pop up message came through offering it for free

I think we all had that but as I have found out, in more than just W 10, there ain't no free lunch.   And in this case, the for free bit, although the reason why I did load it (why not said my IT man at the time), didn't work out.   I was also told that eventually Windows won't be supporting the old versions (which presumably means W 7), although I'm not quite sure what 'not supporting' actually means.   Perhaps I'll find out, and then HAVE to buy W 10!!
- By lkj [gb] Date 16.10.15 18:37 UTC
What a relief I'm back on W7.  I feel as though a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. W10 never again.  The last straw was losing my contacts. The funny thing is I can't remember what I used before w7 and I've used computers since the beginning of time.

Nearly hit the yes button on my free windows 10 upgrade today! Thankyou for the warning, will wait :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.10.15 23:18 UTC
I lost my contacts (Outlook Express) when I went from Windows XP to 7, not amused, means I have lost most of my puppy owner email contacts unless they have contacted more recently

Windows 10 worked fine to begin with but now we're past the free trial period we're getting constant blue screen errors.  The latest thing is a critical error message: 'start menu and Cortana not working' it goes on to say they will try to fix it next time we sign on. I've been on several tech. forums and tried various fixes for this but nothing has worked.  I think we will have to buy Windows 7 and reload it.

So far i have no probs with it but i upgraded from win 8 not win 7, when they stopped XP support i had to get anew PC (last july), my other was ancient Dell, this is a Lenova ex IBM, no idea if any of that  makes any difference.

As far as them now trying to charge me for 10, I would contact trading standards straight away, they offered 10 free which meant win 8 was removed by them so i would want win 8 back..what i dont want is PC hassle, i can only say i have had non so far...early days yet:eek:

Yes but it replaced win 8 i think.....I have not noticed any difference in the things i do on a pc, there must be things but i think it  depends on what you do for it to make any noticable difference

Sony advised not to upgrade as most of their computers aren't compatible yet, so I'm waiting until they say it's safe.

It's one thing after another with this d*mn windows 10! Getting very p'd off with it now. Logged off earlier and now I am back on it has turned everything huge! I have tried the usual means of reducing the size of everything and failed. The 'magnifier' is turned off and I am now running out of idea's. Can anyone help please? I have managed to reduce the size of text, but everything else (desktop,OE, screens etc) are all still huge and distorted.

It's interesting all this jumping in and regretting it with something new, and on the other hand waiting for any glitches to be sorted out first.   I have noticed it was the same with our Peugeot 2008 X-over.   We bought one of the first and didn't see ANY locally for quite a number of months.    Since the early days however, we are now seeing a lot locally!    I would say I have had no problems with mine, although there have been a few recalls - as I remember, the first for rear seat-belt adjustment (we never use the rear seats - they are always flat for the hounds), and then for a handbrake adjustment.  Again I didn't notice anything apparently wrong.   It never occurred to me to wait but perhaps I should in future!

It's the first and last time I will take up such an 'offer' again!

> It's the first and last time I will take up such an 'offer' again!

As said earlier, I was persuaded to load W10 by an IT man we used.    Afterwards, and once I'd gone back to W7, I was told by the local IT shop in town that W 10 works better from W7 and not W8 ..... the older I get, the more suspicious/cynical I get with what I'm being told.   All I can say is W 10 didn't work for me although it loaded fine but then the fun started!   But then I was also told to stick with W7 rather than go to W8!!!
