Topic Dog Boards / General / Fireworks :(
- By St.Domingo Date 29.09.15 20:28 UTC
Last year was the first that my dog was upset over fireworks and it went on for several nights after the fireworks had stopped.
Two nights ago someone set some off, so tonight is the third night we have had pacing, panting etc.
I have tried Rescue Remedy without effect.
Is it worth going to the vet, is there something we could get to help her relax ?
I really can't cope with it and it must be  very unpleasant for her too :(

Did you just try the rescue remedy at the time? I find it works better if you start putting it in all the water dishes  about a month before.

I have a calming spray which my vet recommended so I'll be trying that this year http://www.petremedy.co.uk/

Damn all blasted fireworks!!!

My friend her dogs are petrified of them. She gives them a good walk in advance if she knows they are going off that evening, feeds them up on pasta and then puts thunder coats on all of them, closes windows and curtains and they settle

I like Zylkene but not from my vet!  Found them much, much cheaper online.  You need to start ASAP to get the best benefit.

They will arrive the day after you order.

Damn all blasted fireworks!!!

My feelings exactly. It is quite ridiculous in the UK. Most European countries have strict controls over when and where Fireworks can be set off, particularly  with regard to livestock areas. In the UK we seem to be unable to enjoy a special day and have to anticipate/celebrate well in advance and in excess. I despair of these Bonfire Societies and wish I had the courage to tell them exactly where I'd like to shove their collection boxes. Their parades and displays are usually well out of sync. with the event celebrated, that being November 5th/Guy Fawkes Night. When I was a child the displays were only held on the 5th November. If that day fell on  a Sunday, then we had our fireworks on the Saturday. Okay, there were a few incidents of 'bangers' being bought by older children. These were sometimes strategically placed under piles of dog poo ! No, I dread the' Firework Season' . My Paddy shivers and shakes. The other dogs just try to outdo the noise. Wish they could be banned.

I use melatonin here and I wouldn't touch anything else now (except prescription xanax for the really bad nights).  Over the years I've tried just about every OTC remedy and it beats the lot hands down.  Plus, it's metabolised quickly - it takes effect within half an hour usually - so if you're caught off guard it's still useful.  It's also got a bit of a cumulative effect if you dose it 2-3 times a day.

And, it's a very safe thing (as told to me by a vet behaviourist with much experience using it) so if the starting dose doesn't help, you can increase it.  Phoebe gets double her weight-dose every day, and more on top for fireworks, thunder etc.

i have same problem with hector last year i got him pootch and mut calming ttreats omg they really worked and he was so calm will be geting some this year

Why do they allow fireworks to be sold so early? I agree we need better restrictions. One night November 5th should be enough for either home bonfire parties or arranged ones NOT two weeks of it. Luckily none of my dog's have reacted badly to them in fact the Labrador used to watch the displays avidly. Our cats  thou totally different and they really hate it and shake in corners.  Plus the neanderthal morons who think it's great to throw bangers in the streets, over people's  hedges, fences really do my head in. A huge fine and community clean up for these offenders. I'd suggest tar n feathers  but it's outdated!

Last year I found the best thing to do was put one of mine in his crate I think he felt safe and settled down. It was just desperation though as previous years it's been a nightmare will be doing that again this year.

Nikita - where do you buy yours from, I'm keen to try it this year.

Can't we just have justifiable homicide and be done with it?

I'll PM you munkeemojo.

Thanks for your replies.
Last night was the fourth night in a row of panting/pacing etc from a couple of fireworks on Sunday night, and I've no doubt it will continue for a few more nights. We are all more than a bit fed up with it !!!!

I've ordered the Zylkene to try for times when we know this will happen, Bonfire night, New Years etc
But I would like to try the Melatonin for times when we aren't expecting it and I need an immediate response so if Nikita would let me know which product to get (I believe you have to look for the pure product ?) and how much for a dog weighing no more than 4kg that would be great.

Your lucky if it's only around November, here we get them year round and of all things in the daytime, what's with that???

Luckily none of mine are afraid of them, but they do set term off barking so much that at their peak I take them out for walks in them as they only bark at them at home protecting the house.

Had to stay down in Eastbourne last night because I was working late. Fireworks going off until late. Why ???!!! Fortunately I only had a couple of deaf oldies down there with me . No way could I go back to living in the town. I pity the poor animals subjected to this night after night for months. When will there (effective ) legislation to protect us from this antisocial behaviour ? People are quick to complain about dog/children noise but the selfish and irresponsible idiots who waste money on fireworks get no sanctions.

I've not read through all of these answers, but just to recommend Kalm Aid which is non-drug and does work (I used it for post-surgery trauma - my boy is such a whooze).

I have been lucky through the years with my main breed to have them not turn a hair with fireworks but can sympathise with those who have dogs that do - my Whippet raises her head when sleeping during the evening, if we get an especially loud bang, but once I've said it's fine, she goes to sleep again.   Around here, it seems nobody can have any form of party or event, without needing to let off fireworks.   But thankfully with the cost of them these days, they don't last long, in the individual cases at least.   For me, they should be banned because the way they are used these days, it's impossible to know in advance as was the case with Nov.5.    If it happens to rain on that day, these parties can last for weeks and when they will happen is a complete unknown.

has any one tried the Thunder Shirts I am told that they are very effective http://www.thundershirt.co.uk/ Pricey I know but if they work ideal
- By Harley Date 01.10.15 16:00 UTC
I use a thundershirt but my dog's fear is so great that I also have to use sedatives for him - vet prescribed. The thundershirt helps but not enough to stop him being a danger to himself.
- By Nikita [gb] Date 01.10.15 20:14 UTC Upvotes 1
Tried it, don't like it although I have known it help some dogs.  The velcro is the problem - far, far too much of it.  I've known dogs with no noise issues whatsoever freak out the first time the Thundershirt is taken off and that's the usefulness gone.
