Can anyone tell me please why both our dogs keep sneaking into the living room and eating the potting compost of a couple of large floor-standing plants?  They make such a mess and then proceed to wipe their faces all over our sofa.  This has been going on for a few months now but then before that they didn´t really have access to plants in floor-standing pots.  Both dogs are mature, castrated and perfectly healthy.

I had a couple of American Cockers in the past that would eat the compost from the plant pots. When you think about how compost is made there's obviously food waste in there and they find it irresistable. What about putting a layer of gravel over the compost so the dogs cant get at it so easily.

I´ve suggested we get some stones/pebbles but in the meantime the compost in the pot is getting lower and lower and the floor is getting decidedly messy.

And make sure it's not cocoa mulch, that's poisonous to dogs as it has the same stuff that chocolate does.

It's the calcium/chalk they are after - I'd bet.   I had the occasional one who'd do this, given the opportunity but it was mainly with the outside tubs.

Doesn't everyone feed their dogs on potting compost?

Sorry Honeymoonbeam, couldn't resist.
