Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / feeding a salmon-based food to a pregnant bitch
- By rabid [gb] Date 17.09.15 20:22 UTC
With all the concern in the news about pregnant women not eating too much salmon, due to mercury levels, what do people think about feeding pregnant bitches a salmon-based food like Fish4Dogs?

I like the idea of the omega 3s and brain development and that kinda research, but a bit worried about mercury levels...?

I and several others stopped feeding Fish 4 Dogs when we had very sick bitches when they reduced the fish content, and changed to using Pea flour.

They all now use Simpsons Fish and Potatoe and had no issues with it, but I prefer the Lamb and Potatoe, but they also do Duck and Potatoe and chicken and Potatoe.

It's a good price on their breeder scheme in 15kg bags

Thanks Brainless :)

So no probs with mercury content and unborn puppies then?  Or is the fish white fish?  Will go check out...

It's Salmon, the reason I prefer the Lamb is that sheep tend to be out at pasture so basically free range, and salmon is likely to be farmed, with all that goes with that, though they say they use wild (and chickens and ducks intensively reared).

None of my friends have had issues, but would they know?

If I had any worries over the the mercury though I'd use one of the other sensitive range, Lamb duck or chicken with potatoe.

The farmed salmon are genetically engineered triploid fish - chances are it wouldn't be a problem, but I wouldn't take the risk myself

Interesting as after I did some research i changed to Simpsons, the lamb product as felt it could be as good as Arden Grange but the breeder scheme price much better,
Mine seem to be doing well on it although I admit I have not yet reared a litter on it. I'm not great on the scientific bits but it seemed to be on a similar par with AG. It seems to have a
crunchier make up to the kibble which mine seem to enjoy anyway.

My bitch had her litter in May and she was fed on Fish 4 Dogs salmon and potatoes. I didn't change her to puppy just kept her on the adult and added protein we had no issues.
