Does anyone have any tips on getting pup to stand ( and not move) when getting used to ringcraft etc
:)

Patience! Just parctice the standing up part first - dont worry about leg position or anything like that - and only do it for about a minute at a time, a coupl eof times a day - increasing the amount of time standing... always give a release command - praise and treat... If they move say no...

I always found that it was easier to support pup under the tummy at first.. and then lower hand so that if try to move or sit down you can correct immediately...

Alex

I don't know how to teach a "stacked" dog, but I teach my "freestanders" when I feed them. They don't get their food bowl down until they have all 4 feet on the floor. Then I progress to them having to stand still for a little longer when I say the command I use in the ring "Show off". As the weeks pass they improve till they reach a happy, natural stand, tail wagging, as they look up at the bowl. Once they reach this stage we can practice with titbits and the show-lead.

Hope this helps.

Hi Lel,
Guess it is your staffy puppy you are learning to stand :-)
If you have a rubber mat of some kind then that is the best thing to learn on for two reasons: 1. At shows your dogs stand on rubber mats 2. they do not slip.
Lift your pup under the chest and tummy and lower onto mat, not high only a couple of cm. That way as a pup he will place his feet.
Hold him gently under the chin with one hand and with the other hand at at first do as Alex says. You can stroke under the belly to reassure him. While you are doing this say stand gently. As Alex says do this for a couple of minutes about 3 times a day.
After a few days and he is calm with doing this they still holding under the chin with one hand use the other to start positioning his feet, still saying stand. Work on the front feet first, when he is OK with that start working on the back freet too. When you first start doing the back feet you might find he starts to drop his top line. If he does this when in position just give him a little lift between his chest and belly to bring his top line back up. Think it is just a nerve thing, when he gets more used to standing you will not need to do this.
When he has gor the hang of this then again still holding under his chin using the other hand take the lead and get him used to you holding the lead up above him and encourage him to stay still. Slowly start taking your hand from under his chin and encourage him to stay looking forward with a tit bit, but without moving :-). When he has perfected this get him used to you standing up just holding his lead whilst he is standing. It is optional whether you stand up as many in the ring stay knelt/squatted by the dogs.
Personally I think it looks more impressive to have a dog stood and owner stood but it does take lots of hard work. Some of mine have done it but some not!
Have fun :D

Thanks all :)
I can get him to stand but not stay still .
It really is much harder than you think( well- it is to me but probably not to you experienced ones ) :D
And at ringcraft , when he is getting handled and touched he just thinks its time for cuddles and getting fussed over :D

How old is he Lel? (I'm sure you've said, but I've missed it!)

He's just 17 weeks now - I know he's still young at the moment but was looking for any "magic" tips :)

By the sounds of things you are doing the right thing for your puppy and he does seem to be enjoying himself and I think that is just great. Nothing worse that a 6 month old statue of a puppy in the ring. Puppies are just that puppies and I wouldn't have them any other way. Trust me ! It's fun, they are not puppies for long. And I bet there are thousands of folk out there withthe same problem as you. I was one of them, probably still am, mine just won't grow up so I like to think when we go in the ring we are entertaining the folk round the ringside.
