Topic Dog Boards / General / Stopping a Puppy suckling

I have a puppy that is just over 3 months old. She was a singleton and is a very pushy, bossy puppy. She still suckles from her mum even though mum looks to have very little milk left. But puppy is making mum sore trying to feed. The last couple of days she has also been trying to suckle from one of my other bitches a youngster herself only just a year old. Tthe pup just pushes her way in and starts suckling. She didnt have milk but if pup carries on like this she will soon :(

I split them up when ever I see pup doing it but pup is pushy and just waits for the next opportunity. Neither mum nor surrogate seem inclined to tell the pup to get lost so pup just carries on. Pup is eating like a horse so has no need of any extra feeds. It will be hard to split them up completely is this something she will grow out of eventually?

First thought was a t shirt on both bitches so she can't suckle. Hopefully that will break habit!!!

t shirt on the surrogate one might work as she s a big breed. Mum is a Boston terrier so a bit small for my teeshirts :) . pup seems to be going for the hindmost teats so will have to secure it at the back somehow. Thanks for the suggestion.

This isn't normal behaviour, at 3 months.   Could be because she was a singleton she didn't have a 'normal' early start in life but my singleton bitch never attempted to do this I have to say.  I think, 'hard' or not, you can only keep her separated from the other bitches when you are not around, and be ready to pounce on her the moment she tries this, when you are.   Hopefully she will grow out of this - especially if she's making mum sore.   Leaving a situation like that isn't fair on mum, by a long way - and indeed mum's milk needs to dry up, so continually nursing, or attempting to, isn't going to help that!   Again more reason to stop this.

I used a babygro on my Cavalier girl when I was trying to discourage them from too much suckling when already weaned. You can even button it up leave the tail poking through!

I have a small breed and find babygrows do the job.  I have built up quite a selection over the years.

Taking into account everything you have written, I think you have, probably unexpectedly, taken on to much for both you & maybe more important, your other dogs.

The pup is only 13 weeks, he has time to change homes now & get suitably adjusted, so my suggestion is that you do just that ASP rather than all concerned live unhappily everafter!
