Hi all.
I have had to post because I am slowly going crazy, my 9 month old Dachshund has developed a habit that is driving me crazy.  He whines all the time.  If for example my husband and I are sitting working at the table he whines.  If we are busy doing our own thing he whines and it can go on intermittently through the day.  The only time he doesn't do this is when it is evening and we are all sitting watching TV!
I don't know how to stop this problem, he also doesn't like it when I go to take the rubbish or I am talking to a neighbour and have left him for a few seconds I can hear him whining through the door.
I think he has separation anxiety but why would he do this when we are at him? Please help I am desperate!!!

My 3 year old bitch does this and I think it's boredom.
I have only noticed her doing it when we are sitting watching TV but she wants to play. She gets told 'no' firmly but if she carries on I take all toys off her, as she does the whining with a toy or blanket in her mouth.

If anyone knows any different please let me know as I could strangle her sometimes !!!!!!!

Bonnie is a whiner too. She reminds me of a spoilt child "I want, I want" we presume it is a small dog sindrome as we have had large dogs for 40 yrs but never had this problem before. She is only 6 months old so just hope she will grow out of it. We ignore her when she does it.

I'm afraid I can only offer my sympathy as my Doberman is the same, she is very elderly now and has always done it. She whines because she wants her food, then whines after she has eaten it, whines that she wants to go out then whines when she comes back. All the dogs like to lie down quietly in the evening, she lies down whining.

With her it's not that she's anxious when her head is not permanently glued to my thigh, it's more like she is sulking. She is very needy, very loving and truly devoted but I have 4 other dogs, 2 young children and a husband who all need my attention, so she must take her turn. She just lets me know she's unhappy about it.

My SIL's elderly lab came and stayed with us for six weeks and seemed to whine nonstop, nearly drove us all bonkers (she did it at home as well so not that she was missing her owners unduly).
You have my sympathy. At least I could give the dog back after the six weeks.

We had a day trip with Bonnie and met a gentleman that said he had had several shelties over the years and this is not unusual and she is not whining it is her way of conversation. May invest in some good headphones for watching TV.

Have you got any interactive toys for him to take his attention off you for a while? Like a treat ball or stuffed Kong.
How much exersize does he get? Do you do anything to work his brain?
A friend's mother has a whiny dog, she just wants to be with people so much and all the time, however the Times when we use to go up there when we had been doing things with their dogs like after a real long walk (obviously as yours is onky 9 months walks should be shorter)  or after some training she was much more settled and content to just be in our company rather than going ott trying to get our attention. Don't forget dachshunds are ment to be working dogs so some will need more mental stimulation, my brother has two one is a lump but the other is the oppersit a very busy dog.

Oh dear I truly sympathise with all of you who have this because it is so frustrating.  My dog gets a 45 min walk at the moment each day and plenty of time out in the garden also.  Today we took him for a lovely walk through the fields and when we came back I had to go shopping so I said goodbye and left him with my hubby.  As soon as I closed the front door I heard him whining my husband as on the phone, he has to work from home and can't spend the whole day playing with the dog.  I waited to see if the whining woukd subside but instead it escalated to frantic barking.  I came back indoors and he stopped.  Then after a while he started again!
It seems that no matter who he is left with he does this.  I went to the shops and my husband said it took a good hour and glad for the dog to settle.  Then when I telephoned he heard my voice on the phone and began again!
I wondered whether to try those pacifiers that can be placed into plug sockets I can't remember the name of them, do they work? I read that they release pheromones into the atmosphere but is this healthy for dogs and humans to breathe in?

Hopefully someone else will correct me if I am wrong, but this does sound like 'separation anxiety'   you have said you are with him all the time so he has never learnt to be apart from you. He is used to you being available all day every day and when you are not then he complains.
Puppies need to 'learn' that there are times when they need to either chill out or amuse themselves (safely) with a kong or chew while you are doing something else.

I hope someone with experience will come and advise you on how to achieve this.

I have had this problem also. My behaviourist told me to completely ignore any whining from my JRT and it truly works - don't make any eye contact or react in any way.
Hope this works for you as well as it has for me, but give it time.
