Topic Dog Boards / Health / reaction to wormer, what other brands should I try?
- By rabid [je] Date 01.09.15 21:36 UTC
My 17mnth old labrador appears to have stomach ache after worming.  She is very unsettled and whiney, and agitated, a couple of hours afterwards.  It lasts a couple hours and then she's ok again.

I thought it was only Panacur this happened with, but tonight I used Drontal + and it happened with that too.

Are there other wormers I should try?  Any recommendations?  Obviously she has to be wormed, so we will just have to weather this every 3-6 months otherwise...

We use Milbermax  never had a problem?
- By Jodi Date 01.09.15 22:03 UTC
I used Panacur on my dog when she was younger and she had sickness and a runny bum, so tried Drontal next time. She was only sick this time. Then tried Milbermax and no problems at all, so have continued to use that one. Her breeders said they had used Panacur when worming the pups with no obvious problems, so don't know why this happened. She is so rarely sick that it was quite a surprise when this happened.

For people who are just reading and browsing.

Do not use Milbemax on your Collies.

If I were you, before I did any more worming, if this was a reaction to being wormed?, I'd always get a fecal done.  It may well be that your dog doesn't need to be continually wormed!   And it is putting chemicals into a dog after all.   Puppies need to be wormed, from 2 weeks but for me, depending on what your dog is likely to get into, regular worming isn't necessarily needed.

I'd discuss this reaction with your vet because when I have wormed mine, I don't get any adverse reaction.   I've used Drontol and Panacur.   My current buy-in came to us having been said to have been treated using Milbermax.  He wasn't with us immediately after being treated so I don't know if he had a reaction BUT he had abnormal stools so I had a fecal run and it came back showing Roundworm Ova and Giardia!  Hum.

I use spot ons,  by-passing the stomach all together. May be a good alternative for one who can't tolerate by mouth.

I would use worm count  before doing any more worming . This can be done as frequently as you want and I would also look into something like verm-x as natural methods

Thanks guys, I'm going to Wormcount from now on.  :)

I had the same thing happen to my westie girl when she was young - vet swopped her to Milbemax and she was fine - added bonus in the long run turned out to be that milbemax also deals with lung worm so I use that 3 monthly for both my dogs now and use a cheaper (and better for my dogs skin) flea treatment and preventative than advocate which I used to use just to cover lung worm as it is prevalent in my area.

Wish I could risk not doing either at least so often but with lung worm being high here, and bovine TB and many of the best places to walk the dogs are pretty bad for ticks ... I am just not brave enough to take the risk on leaving them in any way uncovered, especially as they used to have allergy problems so little things could blow up into a big problem..... terrible to have to add chemicals to dogs all the time and possibly compromise their nature immune system etc..... guess with that sort of thing you have to weigh things up depending on your dogs and your risks and your areas...

If you end up having to worm - I would recommend Milbemax - and there is another one similar that was okay I think it is called Milpro - both much kinder on tummies than drontal and panacur in my experience/opinion...

I would recommend Milbemax

As said in previous posts

I use milbemax for my collie and silken windhounds, as they are all either hereditary clear or dna tested clear for MDR1. I believe it is safe for adult dogs who are mdr1 carriers or even affected too but not puppies with unknown mdr1 status.

edited to say I know a cockerpoo that almost died eating horse poo from a horse who had been wormed (presumably with an ivermectin type wormer), after spending a week in the vets they did a dna test and sure enough she is MDR1 affected, which suggests that her parentage was not just poodle and cocker!

The one thing with Milbemax, is it's prescription-only, and I don't like the idea of being so dependent on my vet for something I need frequently like wormer - I prefer to shop around online and like the independence of that.  :)

By the way, you can also do Wormcount for lungworm.  I know of several people who do this and have had back positive results and have then treated their dogs, rather than treating all the time without testing.

Can someone explain please about MDR1? My boy doesn't eat horse manure but does if given the chance rolls in it!

Its a gene  carried by some collies and I herding breeds which makes them. Sensitive to some drugs in particular ivermectin which is in . Milbemax .there are some other drugs too but u would have to goggle for those
Unfortunately it causes death from? Anaemia

I cant use drontal with my girl which is strange as her breeder wormed them with the drontal liquid with no problems yet if I give her a drontal tablet she will be sick with in minits.

> which is strange as her breeder wormed them with the drontal liquid with no problems yet if I give her a drontal tablet she will be sick with in minits.

That could be because the Drontal liquid for puppies is for roundworms, and doesn't contain all the same ingredients as the Drontal tablet Multiwormer.

Drontal Puppy suspension contains: Each ml of suspension contains 5.0 mg pyrantel (as pyrantel embonate 14.4 mg) and 15 mg febantel. The product also contains 2.05 mg sodium benzoate (E211), 2.05 mg sodium propionate (E281) and 0.25 mg ponceau 4R (E124).  http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Bayer_plc/Drontal_Oral_Suspension_for_Puppies/-23608.html

Drontal Tablets contain: 50 mg praziquantel, 144 mg pyrantel embonate and 150 mg febantel as active constituents and 116.5 mg Artificial beef flavour irradiated. http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Bayer_plc/Drontal_Plus_Flavour_Tablets_for_Dogs/-23598.html

Main difference seems to be the Praziquantel.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praziquantel

Ah so its not the same thing then the tablets and puppy liquid. Thanks Barbara.
Just checked millbimax (which she is fine with) and it contains 12.5mg milbemycin oxime and 125mg praziquantel, so it must be one of the other 3 ingredients. Cant rember what the other wormer I had last time (it was one that only does tape worm so you can use it with advocate spot on) will have to ask what it was when im up the vets tomorrow, to see whats in that.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 08.09.15 11:18 UTC
Well the other two ingredients are in the puppy liquid, so could be interaction.
- By JoStockbridge [gb] Date 08.09.15 17:21 UTC
wondering if it was either the '116.5 mg Artificial beef flavour irradiated' that's in the tablet or perhaps it was one of the two that's in both but because there is more of it in the tablet maby?
At least the two I use now I know are fine with her.
