Topic Dog Boards / General / Advice for carrying puppy to socialise (before fully vacc'd)
- By Dulcie [gb] Date 26.08.15 22:16 UTC
We're trying to carry our new border terrier puppy (9 and a half weeks old) out and about to get him socialised, without putting him on the floor until he's fully vaccinated, but we're struggling to take him further than just popping to local shops for fear of him needing the toilet when we're out. He's great in the car, so we'd love to take him a bit further afield for an afternoon, but what should we do about going to the toilet out and about whilst he still can't be put on the floor outside of our garden? Any advice would be much appreciated! We want a happy, healthy, well-socialised pooch! Thanks!

on the long drive home after picking up my pup I put puppy pads in her crate and boot of the car. you could try that

Depends on where you are going, if someone else's home then their garden will be fine.
I'd take puppy pads with me, whether the pup will go is another matter.

To be honest, I'd not bother.   We didn't take any of our puppies of that age anywhere off our property, on the ground or not.   And none was affected badly by not going out until they had all their vaccination shots.   It's not for that long after all!!

I put my pups on the ground after the first vaccination. Just don't let them meet dogs whose vaccination status is unknown. I honestly don't think being carried is that much use.

My first two pups I just put on the ground somewhere quiet if they needed a wee, but the last one was on the ground and meeting dogs the day I got her, just before she got her second jab.  In her case the socialisation was a million times more important than the (IMO) small risk of her catching something that got past both her first vaccination and her maternal antibodies.

I take mine out and about as much as possible, I try to aviod high ( dog ) traffic areas but they should have reasonable maternal acquired immunity via the dam so don't get myself into a twist. I don't even start vaccination until 12 weeks as minimum. IME the window of socialisation is relatively short so I wouldn't keep a pupp at home until fully vaccinated

Never keep mine in either and tbh after the first vaccination I put them on the ground but not in high volume dog areas. So basically the same as Marianne.

Same as above, as long as I know there isn't an outbreak of parvo, distemper etc in the area I take them out and about in low dog traffic areas from about 8 weeks.  I don't vaccinate until 10 and 12 weeks.

As a parent I never kept my babies in isolation, in fact if anything in the first weeks the baby gets more visitors breathing and kissing on the baby than at any other time yet we don't start vaccinating them for several months.

Thanks so much for all of your responses! The area around us is apparently particularly bad for parvo, so I don't want to take any unnecessary risks around here, but I think we'll try a drive further out to the countryside this weekend, and I won't let myself get overly worried about letting him down when necessary in safe spots. We'll try a walk on the beach after high tide has washed away any nasties as well! :)
