Any advice would be fantastic.

We are on day 10 with my girl & her stud. Today's shes standing for him & with help he's getting inside. Twice now. He gets quicker, breathes faster & obviously things are happening, then he almost comes away & his parts are balbous   there is no movement to attempt a tie. Is this all normal? I no some don't even tie but I'm confused to as why they aren't attempting to move into that position.

If he's definitely getting right in, you may need to try holding their back ends together a bit so that he stays in as his bits swell up to make the tie. She should also be holding him internally. She may scream as he swells specially if he's a maiden, if they are bigger dogs then you might need 2 people, one to hold them together and one to make sure the bitch doesn't turn and snap if it hurts her.

Ok fab thanks! Yes she's a maiden & a small breed. Very tricky trying to get him inside etc. Least she's standing now. Will try your advice when he next tries. If I'm holding them with my husbands help who do I loosen off on so they turn is it him that starts to turn or her? If she's maiden will she know what to do?

You wouldn't go out and try to learn to drive a car without somebody experienced at your side to teach you how -this is much the same.

Which is why I have a hugely experienced stud owner! Forgive me that I can't contact her 24/7.. I thought these forums are meant to be useful for help & advice. Not to be made like some useless puppy farmer!

You need an experienced person at the actual matings or to have been at matings yourself really.

When he mounts, you will know when he has hit the mark and is ejaculating as he will look as if he is trying to climb a ladder. 

To achieve a tie it is often helpful at this point to not allow him to try to turn for at least a minute (as he has been pulling himself free), this is called 'slip mating' a tie is preferable as it causes a seal which helps send the swimmers along, and also the dog continues to ejaculate during the tie, mostly prostatic fluid by then, which feeds the sperm, which may be why slip matings are less likely to ge5t a bitch pregnant.

By holding him in the dog on top position, or then helping him dismount to stand side by side, or he may wish to turn, so you can steady them while he gets his leg over.

It may be an old wives tale, but it is often said slip matings often happen when the bitch isn't quite ready.

You say the stud is experienced, does he normally 'tie' or are 'slip matings' normal for him, as they quite often are with some toy and some other breeds.

Id suggest you buy the book of the bitch and read it cover to cover. Yes everyone needs to start somewhere however with breeding its not something you should 'learn as you go' as really you need to have a certain amount of knowledge before attempting to breed if you have any hope of spotting if there is a problem and what to do about it.

Yeah he ties but has had litters from slips too. 3 times now he's got in & definitely does the ladder climbing.  Considering she didn't let the other stud on her last season whatsoever, I'm hoping this is progress.

We had our first tie! Last night about 4pm. He mounted, entered & climbed the ladder then turned they were connected for 7/10 mintues. My girl was great! No major struggle & only a few sounds. They both slept well after it.  Hopefully they achieve another today or tomo. Then I assume the stud is good to go home?

I would always wait for the bitch to no longer be receptive, if you have the dog and bitch on same premises.

Many bitches will stand for the dog, and dogs keen to mate, for about 5 days, from ovulation until the ova have died.  Best results are to mate on alternate days from ovulation until the bitch has gone over, but no harm will come to a fit young dog to be allowed to mate daily.

The bitch can't actually concieve until at least 48 horus after ovuation, and they stay viable for about another two days, and ovuation itslef can take 36 hours.  (when they do AI they would do it three days after ovulation due to the short shelf life of thawed semen).

She will nornally make it clear to the male she is no longer interested, or he may loose interest too.

Unless a breeder also owns stud dogs they may be quite experienced, but may not be intimate with the details of the studs part in mating.

If a bitch goes to the stud and the stud dog owner carries out the mating they may never have witnessed a mating in detail.  After all even with bitch owner present they are normally supporting and reassuring the bitch.

Stud work is a skill in itself, even though often nature will take sit's course and we are just in a supervisory role. 

A good stud owner will know how to read their dog to know the difference between polite, half hearted or I must have her now, interest from their male.

Whether he is one who will mate a bitch as soon as she will allow to be sure of her, and then loose interest until the optimum time, whether he will only deign to mate when the time is just right, (in my opinion the best kind of stud) and then only once or twice.

The least useful stud is the one who will mate anything that stands still long enough.

He's tried all day again & she's getting quite snappy but at times will stand no ties although they had 1 slip. Going to put her to my mums for a few hours tonight to give them a break.
