Hi all.. I'm looking for some help and advice on mastitis.
Coco on day 59 of pregnancy. She's had a fab pregnancy up until 6 days ago where I had to take her to the vets with what I thought was mastitis. The vets also think the same to she's been on antibiotics for the last 6 days (last one tomorrow) there has been no change to them at all. They are still firm.

She's happy in herself. I personally don't think they are causing her any discomfort. She's eating, drinking, she's lays on her stomach with her legs behind her happily most of the day. I'm putting warm compressions on them and I'm even doing the cabbage compression story too.. I just want to do everything I can to make she and her milk are as healthy as possible when the pups arrive x

Hi! I don't understand why you and the vet think it is mastitis? Is there pus and pain and heat or a temperature? To me it just sounds like her milk has come in ready for the pups to be born, entirely normal.

We haven't had any pus at all and no temperature. They are warm but not hot.
The only way to describe them is as if she has 2 planks of wood in either side. I've had a litter previously (not with her) and I know what it feels like when milk has come and this feels like noting like that. I know every dog is different too.

Always something new to 'learn', but I'd not have gone to 'mastitis' at this point, before the puppies are born.   Yes, the milk may come down a few days before the whelping, but frankly I'd not want to see that because newborn puppies don't need tons of milk and yes, this can lead to mastitis, AFTER whelping.   Have you been 'milking' her at all?   If so, don't, much as right now, to confirm what's going on, have you tried expressing some of whatever is in there and seen what comes out (condition - pus, blood?)    I suppose putting her onto antibiotics was okay but again, not something I'd have wanted.   I think you really should leave well alone now and hope once the puppies are nursing, all this will sort itself out.   Unless she's uncomfortable and deteriorates of course in which case it's back to the vet or have him come to you given how close to whelping she is!

"Planks of wood" yes I know what you mean LOL, and that is just plenty of milk. I wouldn't worry. Let's face it, the antibiotics hasn't changed anything, and if it was mastitis, then it would have done.
