Hi Everyone,

Just a few questions for ye all. What are your views on dams that have had a c-section? Do you think they are more likely to need c-sections if bred again? Do you think it is worth risking breeding them again? If you were to breed again, how long do you think should be left between litters? and would you automatically do a c-section for the litter?

Just very curious to see what views/experiences ye have had.

Thanks

Without exception I have had a bitch spayed if she needed a section.  And I won't keep a bitch from the litter, believing it's genetic.  I think it is breed dependent, but with my tiny breed I am experienced enough to make it a rule.

By the same token, I have a bitch spayed if she suffers from inertia.  I've proved that theory to be true, and won't keep a bitch from the litter.  Or a dog for that matter, as I feel so strongly about it.

A bitch can need a C section for many reasons, but it's definitely an issue of genetics in many cases.

Two of my bitches have had C sections, both for their third and final litter.  The first was a non progressing labour, (previous litter more than three years earlier) and the second her Great Granddaughter we believe was a malpresentation as first puppy born easily and then two hours later bitch distressed and panicking.

Had either had a C section for malpresentation in a first or second litter, then I'd have another litter with at least one season, but preferably two seasons left clear before mating on the next, but that's my norm anyway.

I would not do a planned section.
