Topic Dog Boards / General / Hip Scoring

I am planning on breeding my Golden Retriever when she is 2 yrs old - she is 15 months at the moment. This will be the first time I have bred from one of my dogs. Today I enquired at my vet about hip scoring and was quoted £265 under a general anaesthetic. I am not happy to risk a GA when it is just for x-rays and I also felt that he didn't seem to be very familiar with the procedure. Does anyone know of a vet who does digital x-rays with just sedation? My dog is pretty calm and laid back so I have no concerns of her playing up. I am in Surrey but am happy to travel. Any advice would be appreciated.

Many vets will tell you it has to be done under GA when the procedure notes quite clearly state

"it is NECESSARY to employ general anaesthesia, narcosis or deep sedation to enable only mechanical (i.e. nonmanual) restraint for the positioning of the animal;"

Just to point out that this breed should really be elbow scored as well, so you ought to get it done at the same time.

I'm in the wrong area, but my vet always hip x-rays under sedation.

Marilyn down in Hampshire.
Goldens also should be elbow scored so might as well do those at the same time for little extra in price :-)

Have you also had her eyes tested for PRA 1&2?

Many thanks for all your replies and advice. I think I will get in touch with Marilyn as suggested. Regarding her eyes we have a dog eye specialist at a vets here where I live so will be seeing him soon.
