Have received 2 critiques for different dogs and I was wondering if someone could explain the terms used to me please the first is "could do with a little more work to head" & the second is for a youngster and says "needs Head to break up"

My take on this would be something in the grooming/trimming/stripping on a coated dog

It's the most logical thing I thought as well but we are actually a close coated breed that requires no grooming.

When a Judge writes "could do with a little more work in the head" they mean the head is rather plain, and they would prefer more shape and devlopment. Sometimes this comes with maturity as is hoped in their critique of the younger dog. But when the dog is already mature it probably isn't going to change any further.

I agree with nursey, I suspect this is a breed that is rather defined by it's head.

Common expression used for a boxer who needs the head to broaden, strengthen and show a mature filling to the head.
Can be used about a plain headed Cavalier too...both head breeds.

Either the head needs to improve possibly with age and maturity say  in the depth of under jaw some dogs are quiet wrinkled as youngsters and as the dog grows this goes maybe the dog is quiet mature in its body and the head needs to fill out . There are plenty of things this could cover.
Personally I would ask the judge when you see them at a show . Photo copy the show report and carry it with you .just ask them if they could explain the terms they used the sentence , most will happily elaborate .
