Has anyone had experience of this condition (the acquired type) in their dog? How did it affect your dog and what treatments etc?
My girl who has not had the easiest time of it with her health. She is 11 in February . The onset of this condition was very quick, effecting her back, initially the thought she'd slipped a disc, after blood tests etc, myasthenia gravis was the diagnosis. She is on painkillers which have improved her greatly. She is on steroids for a pre existing condition.
Having researched this condition a little bit, apparently steroids should be avoided ?
Any information from you guys, very much appreciated.

It's many years ago now, I had an ESS with MG.  Megan was diagnosed when she was around 18months..It affected her back and rear muscles mainly, simply collapsing, especially if she got  excited (try and stop a working ESS from being excitable!)   and it was hit and miss with medication until finally finding a dosage that suited.  She was on Mestinon and after around 9months varying dosage in the minutest levels, she finally settled into a good active life.  She was 9 when I lost her to a brain tumour, and very rarely did the MG give her any bother. In fact I don't recall her ever having an attack after dosage was stabilised.(but the memory (mine) dulls with time)  She was never on painkillers either. I can't comment on the steroids, since she was never prescribed them.

Thank you for your reply, very informative.
I'm sorry to hear that Megan had the same condition, and at such a young age :(
As with Megan my girl was fine one minute and the next she didn't want to know anything, she was excited as it was tea time, as soon as she'd eaten, she totally switched off.The lumber area was also affected and her hind legs.
I do worry about it suddenly happening again, but for the moment she's ok.

I had to look this up to be sure of my knowledge

This link may help although you probably already know much of what's written  .... http://vetspecialists.co.uk/factsheets/Neurology_Facts/Myasthenia_Gravis.html

When it comes to medication with side effects, I have always weighed the benefits of the medication vs not using it and with an older dog, if medication is likely to improve quality of life, if not a cure, then I agree to it being used.   The dog may not outlive the time the side effects cause a problem after all.

I totally agree Mamabas ! Medication such as steroids do have side affects , but they have given her a much better quality of life, the morning of her episode with her back, I was thinking how well and happy she was, as long as I can keep her that way, then I'm happy.
