Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 3 1/2 week old puppies with diarrhea

Hi all,
my bitch recently had a litter of 11 but sadly two died and now has 9. The rest are all 3 1/2 weeks old and have begun weaning. Their poo has been normal but within the past few hours or so, we noticed that there poo has become very loose and before we put them to bed, it was extremely runny. We have given them each some probiotics and are hoping that will sort anything out. They are having 3-4 meals a day of soaked complete food, blended with puppy milk. We have been putting more than they can eat in and letting mum finish it off. Are we perhaps over feeding them?

We think mum has a touch of mastitis. One of her teats is lumpy and when I hand expressed the teat, there was a yellow discharge. Could this cause diarrhea?

Any suggestions?

Vet visit to get that mastitis sorted.  And todays antibiotics can safely be given to a lactating bitch.  She will be much more comfortable after being treated.

You will have to wait for a breeder of larger dogs to come along as I don't start weaning my breed that early.

I wouldn't use puppy milk myself as I've never had pups NOT get diarrhoea from it. As long as they feed from mum they don't need it. But yes, mastitis can turn very serious so always need sorting out.

Thank you for your comments! I'll definitely stop with the puppy milk and see how that goes.
