Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / dog warning signs on gate?
- By welshie [gb] Date 27.07.15 08:58 UTC
My daughter has to pass through enclosed courtyard to get to her house, There are 2 alsations loose quite often one is quite agressive
Should the owner of the dogs have a warning sign on the gate and some sort of bell, alarm etc that visitors could ring so dogs if out could be put away ?

The dogs should never be out in a public area unsupervised. I would be very tempted to speak to the owners to make sure they are. If that does not work then they need to contact the dog warden. Its a dangerous situation for her. Everyone is entitled to free and safe passage to their access door so unless she is using a short cut or is really not allowed in the courtyard she has the law on her side. If she rents from the dogs owners she is still entitled to gain access without fear of attack.

As above.  And the DDA does cover private property now too so even if the courtyard is not a public space, if she expects to be able to cross that area in safety - i.e. if she is allowed there and they know she will be there - then those dogs should be kept away and if she does get hurt, she could prosecute the owners.

I think the jury is out re actual 'dangerous dog' notices.   To some extent this is admitting you HAVE a dangerous dog.   I have a notice alongside my front door which says 'I live here' and a picture of my main breed.   This is as much to alert the authorities in the event of fire and us being out.

I totally agree with the fact these dogs shouldn't be roaming loose and that anybody has the right to gain access to their property, without running the gauntlet past two dogs like this !!   If nothing else, dogs must be under the control of their owners at all times - which is for me, what makes it all the more tragic that a group of dogs mauled an elderly Lab, out with her owner, to the point she was so badly injured that she had to be put down.   I gather nothing has been done by the police.   I thought the police (UK) were taking dog on dog attacks way more seriously these days?   The dogs are apparently still being exercised in the same area.

ps   Indeed, the DDA covers attacks on private property (humans) now.

My cousin used to have a notice saying "Loose dogs, please keep the gate closed".  She wasn´t "warning" people of anything; just requesting that the gate be kept closed to prevent the dogs getting out.  (She has a house set back in a large plot with no conventional front/back garden.

I have another notice on the back (side) gate to the back garden which says 'For Dog's sake please shut the gate'!

What a great sign . It may just be enough to make people think.
And I agree . To say beware of the dogs etc in this day and age is almost saying the dogs will bite you.
