Hi do you go though your vet for a dna test or the kennel club I am having my girl tested before mating next year.

One of mine is DNA'd which was through the Kennel Club. It was some years ago and I had it done to comply with the KC AB scheme as she is not chipped. Now ( she is 9) I will have to have her chipped anyway.
\the first test came back negative by the way - apparantly I had done it wrong - ha,ha. No problem the 2nd time.

Tested for what?

Depends on what it is. When I DNA test my Papillons for PRA1 I have to collect cells with a cheek swab and post them off to America, pay online, then send the results to the KC. A vet does not come into it.

I do wonder about vets sometimes.

They criticise breeders, but they do nothing to publicise available health screening.  We don't expect them to know what is available for every breed, but the kennel club has a full list of what DNA tests are available by breed and laboratory, easily found with a Google search.  And the BVA schemes of course.

Even when I have asked at practices about hip and eye testing they seemed woefully clueless.

A friend has a puppy buyer who shows, who she is guiding though the needed tests.

We now have Glaucoma, a rarely found early form of PRA, and Dwarfism test available in the MydogDNA Genescoper panel.  The male she owns also needs testing for prcd -PRA with Optigen, the bitch is Hereditary clear.

She orderd her tests on-lien from Finland but when the swabs got to them there was insufficient DNA.  She lsot confidence and decided to ask her vet to do them giving vet the paperwork.

Vet told her it's best to do bloods, and charged her £300 for doing her two dogs.

When she got back to us to tell us this, she seemed confused when we pointed out the need for the Optigen test as vet said there was no such test!!!

Upshot was the vets had sent the bloods to Idexx, to test for what we have no idea.

Needles to say, she went back and got her money back, but she now has no swabs as they were thrown away!!!

No you don't need the vet to take the mouth swab for CKCKS testing.
Just apply to AHT for kit and carefully follow the instructions.
These results will be added to the database of Clear/Carrier/affected which is invaluable to all of us.

No reputable or caring breeder of CKCS should ever do a mating without ascertaining the DNA status of BOTH parents.

With wholecolours having nearly a third as carriers for EF then it is Russian Roulette to do otherwise.
