ok i have cavaliers....2nd choice cho chow 3rd wud be a westie :)
- By taffyparker [gb] Date 15.02.03 10:33 UTC
Actually on second thoughts.......if all our chosen breeds suddenly disappeared, I'd kidnap all the champdogs folk, put you all on a plane to faraway dogeating countries. You'd help me rescue some dogs from this disgusting fate. I'd hold you all hostage until you bonded with the liberated dogs and then we'd all return home, new companions in tow. You'd forgive my millitant actions and some of the more forceful members would stay in said countries over throw the governments and enforce puppy power.:Dzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- By Sandie [gb] Date 14.02.03 19:53 UTC
I would have to go for a golden retriever or maybe cocker spaniel, I have 5 springers and love them to bits.
- By ace [gb] Date 14.02.03 20:57 UTC
The trouble with me is i'v 3 fav breeds my afghan because he's lovely to live with.the chinese crested because they are such livewires and make me laugh and my tibetans because they are fun to train if i couldn't have any of those breeds i guess it would have to be a wolf hound my other half has wanted one for a good few years now but with all the other dogs we just don't have the room, never mind maybe one day.
- By Kash [gb] Date 14.02.03 21:18 UTC
If no GSD's then it would have to be the Border Collie:) What are the dogs that are similar to a BC but have tan markings in them too and I don't mean smooth collies- they have the BC coat:confused:

Stacey x x x
- By Lara Date 14.02.03 21:25 UTC
 They're border collies too!
- By dollface Date 14.02.03 22:06 UTC
For a big dog it would have to be a Dane, French or Neo Mastiff. A little dog would be an English or French bulldog. I just love their faces and their size. So hard to pick I love all dogs especially the short haired ones. Hubby won't let me get any hairless dogs :(

ttfn :)
- By Kash [gb] Date 14.02.03 22:08 UTC
Lara are they recognised etc for the colour still dispite the tan? Do you know what I mean it's not a fault or anything:)

Stacey x x x
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 14.02.03 23:43 UTC
Stacey the only colour fault stated in the breed for border collies is that white should not predominate. The ones with tan markings are tricolours :D Gillian
- By Kash [gb] Date 15.02.03 12:30 UTC
Thanks Gillian- I can now say I adore *tricolour BC's*:D :D :D I've seen a few but wasn't sure (not knowing collies) they really do look lovely:)

Stacey x x x
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 15.02.03 19:15 UTC
Ah but Stacey which tri -colour black and white tri blue and white tri bluemerle tri he he he :D they do come in a lot of colours :D
- By Kash [gb] Date 15.02.03 19:37 UTC
Oh Gillian- now you're just plain confusing me:D I was someone who thought Rough Collies were lassie dogs- tan and white, Smooth Collies were lassie short coats- same colour, and Border Collies were Black with the white blaze down the front- kind of like if you went down them with a decorating roller:D Then I thought oh- okay there are tri coloured BC's with a bit of tan in them- to be talking black and white tri blue and white tri and bluemerle tri is just plain confusing:D :D I bet you're getting a giggle out of confusing me aren't you:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Don't you have any links that I can look on and see before I go looking daft talking to BC experts at shows:D :D :D

Stacey x x x
- By Kash [gb] Date 15.02.03 19:39 UTC
Can I just ask too- what's the average life span of a BC?

Stacey x x x
- By LynnT [de] Date 16.02.03 22:12 UTC
Ooh thanks for the cop-out Stacey! Well, I'll have one of those blue and white dogs that looks like a collie, then a brown and white one,.......:D

Okay, so I've always liked Westies but I think they'd be too much dog for me after the BCs!:) I've always liked the look of Samoyeds (yes, ever since Owen MD. Who? you say). Then there was this beautiful chocolate coloured Chow I saw, looked just like a teddybear....(I'm hiding behind the sofa now:))

Honestly I couldn't say because I haven't done any research into other breeds and I don't know what I'd be looking for. I'll have to stick to bcs.

If GSDs [god forbid] weren't available anymore, i think i'd go for a Malinois. i've met two, and they have a fantastic sense of humour and are VERY funny doggies. They do seem to be as intelligent as the GSD also.
Second probably DDB, Bullmastiff or Ridgeback. Probably ridgeback.

- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.02.03 22:58 UTC
If it was to be a small dog, then a Border Terrier. I would realy prefer them as a second breed, but I can only keep so many, so not the room to diversify.

I am definately a Spitz person though, and Finish Laphunds appeal! :D

Big smooth coated dog I like is the Hamiltonstovare!!!
- By margaret [gb] Date 14.02.03 23:10 UTC
My breed is great danes but if had to choose another I think I would go for the Black Russian Terrier and for my second choice it would have to be Irish Wolfhounds and for my 3rd choice I would opt for a wire haired dachshund - weird taste or what !
- By alfie [gb] Date 14.02.03 23:21 UTC
I have a Whippet, Lurcher and Italian Greyhounds, but have always liked the working group- before I decided to get my first Whippet, the other choice was a Bullmastiff!
I have always fancied a Great Dane, I like their lazy comfort loving nature, and I love Rotties. In fact, I visited a Rottie breeder today, for my work (terrible job, but someone's got to do it!), and had a 2 year old male 'puppy' who just had to crawl up on my lap! He was so comical, hanging over by about 2 feet either side of my lap, grunting and groaning as he tried to stop himself slipping off, while licking my face from chin to forehead! I have visited several Rottie breeders lately, and have been most impressed with the beautiful soppy natures of the dogs.

Sooo, I guess it would be 1.Great Dane 2.Rottweiler 3.Bullmastiff

If I had the house/land/time and finances.... I would have at least x1 of the following breeds (obviously including my present xpointer Tess)

Pointer : to prove to myself that they are as intelligent, loyal and funloving as Tess, Id also like to have a pup to train to gun.
Golden Retriever : as my previous Inda was so loving, patient and welcoming to all the new animals I introduced into the home, and again I would like to give the dog to be trained for what it was bred for.
GSD: again such devoted animals, and I sorely miss my Leisha from 20 yrs ago as she helped me through bad times.Would like to train it on agility.
Yorkie: cause I always used to be negative about them but have grown into respecting their fiesty attitude. And would take up less space on my bed!!
Border Collie: again going back to my youth on the farm ... a dog thats whole attitude is to please..regardless what they get in return.Would have it working by rounding up my horses and goats.
Irish Setter and Dalmation: sorry if I offend anyone by classing them together but I love there scatty nature and total vivality.
Great Dane: always wanted one when we had the space but was talked out of due to their short lifespan??? Which I now think I was misguided on.
Doberman: cause I think they are one of the most beautifully formed dogs .. I love the whole sleekness of the beast at its peak..I love the attitude ..and Ive always wanted one but never felt since I had the option to choose that I had sufficient time to spend with it as a pup to ensure that one I owned would be a credit to its breed.

:D isn't it amazing that even though some of us are saying dogs of a huge size difference to the ones we already have, the temperments are roughly the same. The GSD folk, with their intelligent dogs tend to like the BCs. Like I said having had the brainless dogs it is difficult to chose something else that is as easy going as Danes are, hence I think the Rottis win for me.
Karyn, just to say that the age a Dane can live until varies greatly from line to line, and also size has a part to play. The smaller danes tend to live longer than the taller ones, but I have known them live from 5years up to 14 years!

I must admit that if I could have got another dog just like our older mongrel rescue, I would never have got our Aussie (although I love her to bits) :) He has got GSD in him, but is about 1/2 the size - what the rest is I'll never know - but his tail is like a husky and his ears stick up and are huge compared to his face. He is very intelligent, very affectionate - great at agility and a wonderful family dog. Please can someone make another just like him :) :)

To the lady who said that her husband would not let her have a Tibetan Mastiff,I have had T.M's since 1986,but if my husband said no more,I would be sad to see him go but I would pack for him.You cannot get a breed more doggish, they are one of the oldest breeds in existance.although my choice would be a malumut, He wanted a Dogue de Bordeaux.
- By Lindsay Date 15.02.03 11:23 UTC
Difficult question - probably a GSD if there were no Belgians (sob!!!) but also have a soft spot for lots of other quite different breeds that would'nt really fit so well - Labs, Parsons, Polish Lowland, Viszlas, Saluki, (always wanted an Arab horse and a saluki) but i suppose at the end of the day I like dogs a bit (well vaguely) wolf like....so back to the (unexaggerated) GSD ;)

- By Daisy [gb] Date 15.02.03 11:40 UTC
This is what is so appealing about our mongrel - he is probably fairly close to the basic dog that was around before people started to breed for specific characteristics :) I am afraid that I like dogs to be dogs, not a fashion accessory or cuddly toy :)

Tell you what, we'll swap for a day :) You have my mals and I'll have your TMs :D I agree with you entirely, we did all the research into TMs but the mals won in the end. Wouln't swap them for the world, but if I win the lottery......

If I can't have another Golden Retriever it'd be a GWP - I just love their *untidy* faces :D
If it was a smaller breed I'd quite fancy a PBGV - again love their *untidy* faces.

I'll probably never have either of the above though - my lifestyle is best suited for a *laid back* breed and a GWP would probably need more stimulation than I'd give it. My parents have a PBGV who is wonderful but lets just say her recall is not the best (indictive of being a hound) and I'd be stressed about that on walks.

I saw quite a few mention Leo's but I have to say that the only one I know gives me and Pheebs the willies - it an adolescent and VERY grumbly so unfortunately has coloured my view of them. Phebs does have a Pyrenean as a boyfriend who I adore too but I couldn't cope with one of them when moulting

- By issysmum [gb] Date 16.02.03 09:14 UTC
If you want an untidy face sara the Working Beardie would appeal to you. :)

Lara is very, very scruffy and has a similar coat to a GWP.

if the stafford was not around my second favorite would have to be a whippet such an elagant breed but still as mad as hatters:)
- By snoopy [gb] Date 15.02.03 19:37 UTC
If i couldn't have dachsies, then i would have to have PBGV's or english bull terriers, or maybe greyhounds or afghans.
Ooh it's just too difficult a decision.

I have a baby springer spaniel, if i could not have a springer i would probably go for an old english sheepdog, space and time allowing. However i also love labs and retrievers and have always fancied a white GSD, then theres samoyeds, used to have one and he was adorable. Perhaps i could have one of each plus several others whose names escape me for the moment, think i'm just greedy or indecisive.

Malakai when you said you'd do a swop I thought I'd got rid of the old man at last, but not that lucky.Just heard today my new Tibetan mastiff was born 2 days ago, they are addictive, they old man say's he's going to book me in for therapy, may be because I did not tell him, and he got the phone call to say the litter had arrived, the next 7 weeks are going to seem like a life time untill I can bring her home, He say's we are going to have a sign made say'ing Battersey dog's home,We have 2 newfies,a Yorky,Tibetan spaniel,2 T.M's and a Dogue de bordeaux 2 cat's and a 4 year old grandaughter that lives with me I do not know what he is moaning about.Being brave we are takeing her to Thetford show tomorrow
- By SaraW [gb] Date 15.02.03 20:51 UTC
ah Britney

Just the person - my Mum told me earlier she read an article somewhere that described a tibetan spaniel as being part dog, part cat and part monkey in personality - I think it sounds great :D
Would you say that sums the breed up ???

SaraW :)
- By Malakai [gb] Date 16.02.03 17:51 UTC
Sorry Britney, got one hubby, prefer dogs :) Another puppy! Can you send me a picture when you get it? I so love the breed. I met a T. Spaniel at Discover dogs one year and fell in love with it. I tried to get my Mum to have one, but she stuck to cats. We're planning on four mals eventually, but have to wait for the two elderly mongrels to go first. Not that I'm wishing them away! I love all the dogs. We've been at a rally all weekend - I guess that's a plus for the mals, we get to go out and about with them :)

having had gsd and never wanting any thing else we have now a dobe completly different to my gsd who was a gracious lady, he is a mad dog but would not swop him for the world,so i would pick dobes
- By Lily Munster [gb] Date 15.02.03 21:13 UTC
If I couldn't have my Munsters???????? Erm, is anything up to their standard???? ;)

I like German Long Hairs but thats self explanatory seeing they used to be the same breed, I like Irish Water Spaniels as they look complete characters (Until John put me off!! Yes you did!!!!) and I like Irish Red & Whites.

My "old ladies" breed might be a mini l/h dachshund but as I have several more decades to get to that, just have to wait & see! :D
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 15.02.03 21:17 UTC
Back to the point of this thread. If I couldn't have my collies then I've always quite fancied a Pomerianian (sp) seem to me like big personalities in tiny bodies.Gillian
- By mari [ie] Date 15.02.03 21:26 UTC
you are so right Gillian
Poms are brilliant and so brave .Abbie died yr before last aged 12 and we were all devastated.
She was got for Keith as when he was a small boy and the collies [yes I had rough collies]
got too big for him to cuddle he wanted to a pup that stayed a pup . so we thought pom . right untill she died she slept with him and she never got old or infirm. he just woke one morning and she was dead
She was soo funny killed a magpie and a rat in her day and left the delivery men in stitches with the ferocity she went for them to protect her domain .She was only the size of a pint glass:D
Yes a character

After the gsd, well i already have my second breed the cocker spaniel but if i had a choice it would be the alaskan malamute.
- By britney1000 Date 15.02.03 22:54 UTC
Sarah w She forgot the bit about them thinking they are ten foot tall and 8 stone mine thinks she can take on the world.Size does not matter, but the Tibetans have a independant cat like temprement. She loves a cuddle but on her terms only and she has the cheek of the devil, and the love of an angel. She is eight years old and still thinks she's a puppy.
- By Shlugh [gb] Date 15.02.03 23:59 UTC
OOerr!

Hard question. I have a staffie cross (and a hankering for a full bred next time) a GSD (14 years, old lady), GSD cross and a collie/ retreiver cross.

The dogs are mine and hubbys jointly ( an adoption through marriage with his collie/retreiver and full adoption of his brother's GSD and GSD cross when he emigrated to Austalia)

My love, I feel is the Staffie (Smile!) and my second is a Chocolate lab ( I grew up with a stunner)

Failing that really, any dog will do, as long as they love me like I love them and are there when I come home at night. Bless!

Hooray for all and any dog, may we never be without their cold noses and warm hugs!

Hi easy question for me. My first loves were gun dogs; springers and labs and so my second choice would be a chocolate lab, (sorry John!) and I may even be getting one this summer if my next op is a success. I have waited a long time for another lab as my dear lab Revel died in 98 and I have missed her daily. I also have a hankering for a Manchester Terrier , I cannot understand why these dogs are not more popular, though its probably better for the breed , that they are not.
- By danielchalkley [gb] Date 16.02.03 20:01 UTC
Hi all,
My favourite breed would be between Collies and GSDs - I cannot say which I like more. As for my second favourite, well, that would probably be between a Welsh Springer Spaniel, and a Beagle; again, I can't really make up my mind, I like both of them.
One thing that I would say though, is that GSDs and possibly Beagles need lots of exercise - although they would be walked twice a day I am not sure this would be enough. Some of you are going to be telling me that Collies need just as much exercise (I'm good at reading minds you see!) - however I have one at the moment and she seems to get on fine with it. Well, I suppose I would say that, wouldn't I.

Best Wishes,

Daniel.

I just love Staffys and thats what i have now .
I really dont know what I would have if they werent around anymore .
What a hard question !!!!
Although i love lots of breeds the staffy will always remain my fave ! :D
although when we were kids we had a collie and she was beautiful and i have very fond memories of growing up with her

Hi most collies do need physical exercise but I too have a couch potatoe one but if you don't occupy their minds thats when you need to watch out !!! :D Gillian

Tell me about it!
- By jannine [gb] Date 25.02.03 13:34 UTC
I have a boxer male who is 12 months old and a complete looney. I can't imagine ever having a different dog but if i had to choose i would pick either a bull dog or a mastiff. I love the big dogs because all though they might look scary i now that my boy has the temperment of and angel and is a big softy at heart!
