Topic Dog Boards / Health / Rescue DDB, starvation case hints for building up.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 22.07.15 20:17 UTC
Today I have rescued a DDB, I have owned them before, losing Fern my last girl in May 2014.
He had been in the shelter a month while they tried to build him up but have let me take him home due to experience with the breed and feel he will thrive in a home.
I am putting him on 4 small meals a day and am going out tomorrow to buy him specific food for him as what I am feeding my others wont be too good for him, they are smaller breeds.
Any advice on what will build him up quick, I have goats milk in for my pup so will give him a good drink of that before bed time too.

You should build him up slowly, trying to do it too fast will only lead to digestive upset.

Do it really slowly. If a dog has been used to starvation diet, high calorie food and high fats may trigger acute pancreatitis which is life threatening.

Slow and steady is the best way with a good diet and supplements like coconut oil/ fish oil etc. Might also be good to have him on a probiotic for a couple of weeks to help his system readjust to food again

Thank you, I don't know why I posted quick, I know its got to be steady, think my heads all over the place today.
I will look for a food with a slightly lower fat content tomorrow, Ive been going to order coconut oil for my others as have heard some good reports ( am I right that it must be unrefined?)
Great idea the probiotic will get him some tomorrow x

Must be raw, cold pressed and preferably organic... You can get it from Tesco if you need a quick fix, but Holland and Barrett frequently have it in the penny sale, Amazon is fairly cheap too.

Hi Cani1,
Congratulations getting your new chap to join your family.

My suggestion for easy weight gain is unfortunately a very smelly one ! Wet green tripe, this is a fantastic natural product that is easily digested even for the most sensitive stomach, you will have little or no tummy problems !   Young and old dogs can eat this with ease.
Many active and working dogs are fed this to help maintain their weight too.

Try not to feed any wheat/grain based diets, wheat is a very difficult product for our dogs digestive systems to digest and just produces a lot of waste (produced as poo).

Take care with the milk whatever type, this can upset the tummy so easilly!

I am sure you will get loads of suggestions from this post and that mine is just one of many to come.

Good luck with your weight gain.
