It's up to you whether you want to strip or clip. Obviously if you are showing the stripping is the method for you.
You can get it done proffesionally (can work out expensive, as it needs to be done 2/3 times a year), or you can do it yourself.
I have a mini wire, i choose to clip (i don't show). I find it much easier and less time consuming.
If you choose to strip (pulling out the top coat), then it might be helpful if you invested in a video or book. There are different ways you can strip, you can just use your forefinger and thumb, or some people find it easier using a stripping knife (which you could get from any good pet shop).
I have stripped my dogs in the past, but find that they are more comfortable being clipped.
In the winter i let his coat grow, to keep him a bit warmer.
