Topic Dog Boards / Health / Fleas in 9wk old puppy

Yesterday we found a single flea and some flea dirt on our 9 week old pup. I bathed her and used flea shampoo and a flea comb, nothing obvious came out. This morning she was still itching/biting so used the comb on her again and got out another live flea. Ive never had a dog with fleas before and not sure what to do with a very young puppy. We have only had her 2 days, my adult dogs are all up to date with frontline and nobody is itching etc.

You need to treat the house with Acclaim or similar that stops the flea lifecycle.  Most of the fleas will be in the environment.

She may still be itching from the bi5tes even if you have killed the fleas.

A friend bought a 7 week old puppy who had about 100 fleas.  She didn't want to use flea products on such a young puppy so she bathed her using diluted Original Fairy liquid for 4 days running.  She had been told that the original one got rid of fleas and it did.  Worth a try.

That's not much fun for a baby puppy.
Better to use Acclaim on the household, which stops them even getting as far as the pups.

Any bathing will kill the fleas on the dog at the time, and a flea comb on the pup will ensure they are all gone.

The household spry is the way to go dealing with the 90% of the issue which is not on the dogs and stops re-infestation by breaking flea lifecycle.

Thanks everyone, she has 2 baths using flea shampoo and we treated every carpet in the house but i was still finding the odd one on her with the flea comb, vet said she could have advocate so treated her with that on Friday and no signs of itching now on her at all and not go anything off with the flea comb either since then.

I found the household spray worked well and the two "bombs" you can use for heavy usage areas. We took the pets out for a few hours and let them work their magic! Never had fleas in young puppy only found them once in my cats but I did go a little too OTT once found a few in carpet too. We have just used Flea treatments for both dog and cats and tick treatment too.
Did the litter siblings have fleas?

Im not sure but our garden sadly isn't fox proof so i suspect that's where they came from :(

Most fleas encountered on our pets are cat fleas, as these are not host specific and happily will live on any animal.

Many other species of flea will hop on but can't live on dogs, for example hedgehog fleas.

The dog flea is pretty rare.
