Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 10 day old Boston terrier puppy! Possible FPS???
- By emzbright [gb] Date 10.07.15 19:16 UTC
Hi just wondering if anyone can give me a bit of advice my Boston terrier had to have a emergency c-section 30/6/2015 and had 1 boy 1 girl sadly 8 days after the little boy gained his angel wings. The little girl is really concerning me atm she seems to be feeding well yet yesterday I took her to the vets and her temp was really low at 33.4 so I took her home and kept her warm all night is this a sign that she too may have fading puppy syndrome???

Is your little girl gaining weight? What happened with the boy? Was the dam herpes vaccinated? Did the pups get colostrum from the mum after birth ( first 4 hours are the most critical research has shown and very little use after 24h).
With fading puppy, some people have had success with plasma transfusion from vaccinated dog so you might want to look in to that. I'm sure somebody here can send links, I'm on my mobile and don't know how to do that! Many vets are not aware of the transfusion Route so you might have to do the work and push it if it is what you end up doing.

Hi yes she's gaining weight slowly. She's been feeding well since she was born. With the little boy it all started at day 5 he was no longer feeding off mum always seemed lethargic so I started bottle feeding then at days 7 he wouldn't take to the bottle no matter how much I tried, he was crying constantly I was having to get him to go toilet myself as mum was ignoring him by the morning he had gained his angel wings. She's not crying like he was and seems very strong I've had her at numerous vets and all I keep getting from them all is take her home and see how she goes it's as if they don't want to know! She's now 11 days old and really don't know where to go from here. All info is greatly appreciated.

It's simply that vets are experts at diagnosing disease or repairing broken bones etc.

They are not experts at puppy rearing.

They can check your puppy and say it seems normal (respiration, heart, absence of obvious deformity), that's about it.

What makes you think the little girl might be fading or is it just the fear after what happened to the boy?
If the girl is gaining weight and seems very strong, I would keep an close eye on her and study what can be done if she does start getting unwell so I would be prepared to tell the vet what I would like done.
I would stop taking her to different vets as this is a stress to her/her mum and also possibly getting exposed to bugs whilst at the vets.
Is it a possibility the vet took the temperature incorrectly when they recorded that very low temperature? Many vets really do not know much about tiny pups...
Very young puppies do have a lower temperature than adults do and of course are not able to hold their body temperature very well.

I would use a heat mat to ensure she is nice & warm and possibly enclosed pen, weight her twice a day to make sure she is gaining ( make sure she has space to get off the heat mat if too warm).
Good luck and crossing fingers she will be fine
