HI Everyone, has anyone had any problems with a dog with an elongated soft palette. My little American Cocker sounds as though she is constantly struggling with catarrh which manifests itself by a constant panting and clicking sound. My vet wishes to operate as he says that it will continue to cause her problems and is easy to fix. Anyone had any experience ?

My Beagle has this but luckily it comes and goes. Sometimes it sounds like croup in children but as this is not all the time my vet feels we should wait and see. Hopefully it won't get any worse, however she did tell me that it is an easy op and if the time came when it got worse then I shouldn't hesitate. From my limited understanding it usually works well as is not a big deal op, but I am sure others with more knowledge will be better to put your mind at rest ( or otherwise)

Yes I have a LC Chihuahua bitch that sounded as if she always had the snots.  I imagine that you will do much better with your breed.

My vet put a camera down with the intention of doing a trimmer job, but found that opening the scissors was too dangerous in case he cut the vocal cords.  He did his best using the snatcher (can't remember name, but they use them for biopsies.)  He wasn't able to do a proper job.  I'm guessing that any other breed would be far more successful.

When asleep she snores for England.  I live alone but sometimes take her to bed with me because it sounds like I'm sleeping with a bloke.

My 12 year old staffy has this.  She is very snottery and snores loudly but apart from that no problems.  Vets have commented on the length of her tongue!

Thank you everyone it does reassure me, I will have the op done as it is affecting her stamina because she struggles to get enough air and gets worn out really quickly. I will update as and when with results. :-)
