Hi I currently have my bitch at a stud who is unproven. She has had a litter already and has been showing all signs of being ready. Yesterday they had a slip mating and he was inside her for around a minute. I understand that she might have a small chance of getting caught pregnant with a slip mating. She has been continuing to flirt with him but he has not shown any interest in her since. which we put down to him not having the beans  due to the slip. We split them up for the night and tried again tjis morning and he is just ignoring her flirting. Do you think that he will be best left for another day as i know that you are supposed to wait 48 hours. He is not showing as much interest as yesterday he would not leave her alone and then as soon as the slip happened he just looked like he wanted a fag and to roll over and go to bed haha

He may have satisfied his initial enthusiasm and now be waiting for her to be truly ready.  In most breeds that normally tie a slip mating often seems to happen when the bitch is not yet ready.

As for having to wait, a dog can mate more than one bitch the same day even, he will only become depleted after several days of matings.

I believe when they collect dogs for Storing semen they will collect daily for three days then wait a few days and then collect more if needed.

Had he been experienced, I'd have suggested that as with many dogs who have mated before, he might just 'know' he's done the job.   Whether a mated bitch gives off a different scent once successfully mated or not I don't know.  Further, one of mine never achieved a tie but his strike rate was 99.9% and the bitch he missed to came back to our other proven stud dog on her next season - same again.   And ditto when she was taken to somebody else's proven stud dog.

Could be she's gone over of course.   Just hope the slip was enough to have done the job!

ps   Yes, he should be able to mate again on the same day really.

My experience is just like Brainless'. Many enthusiastic dogs will get one mating done simply because they are so keen, then refuse to mate for several days simply because the bitch isn't ready, but after a few days you will get proper matings. So if that is the case (and I've had this happen on more than one occasion, with both my breeds) then just the one mating will not likely result in pregnancy as the timing was off. I'd wait at least four more days and try on a daily basis.
