Hi
I am new to the board and wondered if anyone has any experience of inflammation rhinitis. My 9 year old border collie starting snorting in December, this went on and on with numerous visits to the vets. She then had a nose bleed, so she had a rhinos copy and x rays, there was white fluid found up her left nostril so they took a swap and flushed it out. They couldn't find any tumour or anything, the swab was sent away to pathology and didn't show any fungal or cancerous cells, all her blood tests came back fine. So she had two weeks of antibiotics and seemed a lot better.
Since she has had all of this done 5 weeks ago, of she gets excited or does to much exercise she will still snort and the vet has said this is to be expected because of the scarring, however over this weekend she has done more exercise and we have now had a small amount of bleeding from the left nostril which is a concern.
I have had dogs for a long time however never come across this and not sure what to do next, vet doesn't think it is anything nasty and obviously there is the option of an MRI, however the cost of this is a concern and I do not think the prognosis for nasal tumours is very good and reluctant to up the dog through another GA.
If anyone has any experience of this would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks
Kate
Hi Kate,
In April I had my 13 1/2 yo Lurcher euthanised mainly due to a cancer at the top of her left nostril/sinus, though she did have other problems too. She did do the snorting that you describe, and also a lot of sneezing. The discharge was very dense and sticky, I kept finding it on cupboard doors and walls. It was whitish, rather than infected looking, (though it did dry brown), and there was no bleeding from the nostril.
We did not need a scan, as the tumour showed clearly at x-ray/rhinoscopy, and the vet and I jointly decided to not allow her to recover from the anaesthetic - which was her third GA in a few months. She did have heart, bronchial, and skin growth problems too. I don't know if this is any help, but I hope there is a more innocent reason for your girl's rhinitis. Good Luck.
Thanks for your reply, it helps hearing what other people have gone through, she is happy, bouncy and eating well and they couldn't find anything with x ray, rhinos copy which was after 6 months of snorting so I am hoping it is still an infection. She has only had 2 weeks antibiotics and I have ready they sometimes need a longer period of antibiotics so I am hopeful this is what it is. These animals really out you through it, we recently found out she has bad arthritis and spondylosis of spine, so creaking gate but one who things she can still do all the things she did at 5.
Thanks again
I should have said before, feel awful but so sorry for your loss of your woof, always hard we lost our other dog three years ago, god I feel awful for not saying it before, thanks again for sharing your experience though
