Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch aborting 2 pups not formed at 7 weeks
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 17.06.15 10:50 UTC
Hi has anybody ever experienced this, im worried sick, 7 weeks pregnant was scanned at 4 weeks all fine, started loosing discharge, was rushed to vet, scanned and they could see, dead pup, but at least 1 alive, sent home with antibiotics,
Lost 2 unformed pups yesterday, can still see movement, she is 51 days, appetite not as good eating very small amounts off my hand, drinking well,
Just hoping the live pups stay in for at least another 9 days...worried sick about my girl, seems ok but sleeping a lot...any experience with this would be very very gratefully received????
- By Goldmali Date 17.06.15 11:01 UTC
Not with dogs but my most successful show cat ever was born in a litter where the queen aborted some kittens after a few weeks, yet still gave birth to 3 live ones. So it is possible and antibiotics of course are vital.

I've had pups born safe and well after 55 and 57 days so hopefully your girl only needs to hang on for another 4 days or so.
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 17.06.15 11:06 UTC
Ohh i do hope so even one baby at least she can be a mummy, after going through all this, i have been looking all over net but not much info about this, and my little
bible the book of the bitch does nit say anything,  as i say as long as my girl remains well is all that really matters, thank you so much.
- By JeanSW Date 17.06.15 22:41 UTC
My breed only goes to day 56 anyway and pups are perfectly viable.  So just ask her to hang on a tiny bit longer.
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 17.06.15 23:36 UTC
ohhh i keep telling her please keep them in one more week!, her mucus plug has been coming away all day so i'm more anxious now, i know this varies from one dog to another before labour begins. There is nothing more i can do now but keep a very close eye on her, and have fingers, toes and even my eyes crossed everything will work out.
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 17.06.15 23:59 UTC
If we make it to day 56, i will be ecstatic, and breathe again properly
- By JeanSW Date 18.06.15 23:36 UTC
Don't forget to let us know how things go.  And Good Luck.
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 18.06.15 23:53 UTC
Hi we hanging on in there, her abortion  discharge seemed less yesterday, and has increased today, i am hoping the plug coming away there was a pocket of it???, just watching her like a hawk that we not starting to abort again, her appetite is little better all day, have seen plenty movement though so they hanging on in there, i will feel relieved when we get to the safety zone of 57 days, then every day after that will be a bonus.
Thank you jean for asking about us.
- By JeanSW Date 19.06.15 17:50 UTC
Hope she crosses her legs until Monday.
- By saxonjus Date 19.06.15 19:11 UTC
Hope for a few more days for you both, lots of hugs
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 19.06.15 21:26 UTC
Thank you very much!,

We are still hanging in there, she seems fed up and bored, i think she is missing her walks, just going in the garden is not the same, i'm too scared to walk her out, due to her cervix being open and the discharge is not pleasant either, or other dogs ect, id never forgive myself if anything happened, so we staying put!.
- By JeanSW Date 19.06.15 21:37 UTC
Keep an eye on that discharge.  Or rather a nose.  If you get any unpleasant smell race to the vet.  You probably know all that, just reaffirming.
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 19.06.15 21:46 UTC
Ohh my nose is on red alert, it isn't pleasant looking but no nasty smell, if anything it smells of antibiotics if that makes sense, i will off to vet like a shot if i do not feel happy, glad we have 24 hour vets at the surgery i use, makes me feel at ease knowing i will see my own vets should i need them. Thank you Jean

Hi they are still in there and still moving, she is very tired, only eating boiled chicken but drinking water.
under these circumstances i think as soon as she does start ill be ringing vet for a c section, i am worried she will not have the energy to whelp whoever we have left in there.
What are you thoughts?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.06.15 15:00 UTC
My bitch ate very little for about 4 or 5 days prior to whelping.  She then had a very long first stage lasting around 36 hours where she was very restless, whining and even howling.

As soon as her waters broke on day 64 from first mating, she went on to produce her whole litter of 5 large pups in an hour and 15 minutes.

Get some glucose powder in and give it to her to drink to keep her blood sugar up during whelping.
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 20.06.15 16:49 UTC Edited 20.06.15 16:52 UTC
Thank you for your response, I am more worried i think due to lack of exercise/ muscle tone as she is only pottering around house and garden, also the discharge draining this has been for nearly a week now, she is taking small amounts of the chicken every couple of hours or so, i have some liquid glucose to hand, i did give her some off my fingers when she aborted the 2 pups as she looked a little wobbly, and had vomited several times, but not show any contractions or pushing. Pups are still kicking on either side my daughter has called one Happy Feet as it is quite lively  Think i will just ring the vet as soon as she starts and see what they advise.

Hi just an update, thought all was going well, we reached until today, another dead pup delivered, took my girl straight to vet, they scanned her could only see 1 baby alive, she having a c section and spay, can only hope the baby makes it, but my girl is more important, will update asap.

Hi we are home, my girl has 3 beautiful babies, she bit zonked out as yet, but just managed a bit of ice cream didn't want anything else i had to offer, 2 of babies need supplementing at moment, but i am hoping they get stronger as days go on, jeees what a nightmare, got mi fingers toes and eyes crossed they all pick up...thank you all for your comments, i will update as we get on..thanks again
- By Goldmali Date 23.06.15 17:04 UTC Upvotes 1
Oh that's fantastic, what a relief!!!
- By Champ76 [gb] Date 23.06.15 19:48 UTC
What great news, you must be so relieved. Hope mum and pups continue to do well.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.06.15 20:49 UTC
Make sue you keep putting pups to Mum very frequently, she may be sleepy so you must not leave her unsupervised and pups may need waking.  Ideally you do not want to supplement as no substitute milk is as good and the colostrum available ion first hours only is vital for the immune properties.
- By JeanSW Date 23.06.15 21:30 UTC
I am so glad that you have some live babies.  It's been a nightmare time for you.  Good Luck and give us an update when you can.
- By Nikkinoonoo Date 23.06.15 22:28 UTC Upvotes 1
Hi we are all ok, mum has managed a small meal and pups seem to be doing just fine without me supplementing, i think everybody was just groggy, mum has been flat out so i have been popping babies on and helping them go to loo, i am going in less and less now to box, as mum needs to bond with them, i'm just worried bout heat, i did plan to use a lamp but i changed my mind and bought the heat mat (petnap), i'm scared they will be too warm on it, heating is on which the box is right next too, mum is choosing to lie along side the radiator side, and pups look ok not wriggling around or crying, so i think they warm enough, i have turned the mat off now, as i think it all will be too warm, what do you think?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.06.15 22:57 UTC
Newborn pups need heat and those heat pads are never going too get to warm.

As long as the pad doesn't cover the whole box then they can move away from it, and especially the bitch.

Is the whelping box and pen one, a cave like environment helps keep in the and avoids drafts and dogs like it.  this can be achieved in various ways, puppy pen panels put around and a blanket over the top, ro put a table over the box, just so long as you can get to them

I would not leave the bitch and pups unattended at al at this stage, especially a bitch that has had a GA.  Pups should be nursing almost constantly the first three days to bring the milk in, so |I'd be waking pups to feed hourly as she and they may be groggy from GA.

Also she may be a bit dim about it all and could easily crush a pup, or attack, or more likely neglect it.

Hi i have a box with pig rails in, then a pen around it, then blankets draped around, i will switch heat pad back on, better to be safe than sorry, mum wasn't panting with everything on so temp must be fine, pups are nicely spaced out so not piling up for a heat source, and pretty much suckling all the time seem quite content and nice round belly's, mum much better now, just had another feed helping them go loo, and making sure they stay close. I am never far away i cant stop watching them and watching how fabulous mum is being after everything she has been through, i am soo proud of her, she is amazing. And yes she has had GA, much more alert now, which is just fab.

Sandra Simper says: Had similar situation. With our frenchie bitch this year. Had her pregnancy confirmed at 4 weeks, scan showed 2 pups. never felt right with the pregnancy, she lost plug of mucous at 6 weeks and had continual slimy discharge throughout. The vet was not to concerned. She started contractions at 61 days, we took her in for elected caesarean. One live pup and one dead. The vet said he had been dead awhile. the singleton puppy was quite small but otherwise healthy.

Stephanie Presdee says: Same, 2 peke babies born 10 days early, vet said the cords were going green and breakdown had started....he said I couldn't have done anything...I still have doubts now. She went on to have other litters though. Good luck with your pups. Sometimes contact with parvo...so many reasons.

I don't know that brand but typically heat pads for pups have an inbuilt thermostat to ensure the heat is always just right for puppies.

> i did plan to use a lamp but i changed my mind and bought the heat mat (petnap), i'm scared they will be too warm on it,

I have used petnap for years.  Still the one I recommend to people who ask.  I never found the lamp any good for mine.

> I don't know that brand...

They're the oldest and best-known brand available, I had them for my cats years ago. Did the job for numerous litters, and also good to leave on during the day in winter for my adults, as I didn't have central heating then.

Mum and babies doing just fine, and loving the heat mat!, so glad i bought it now worth every penny!. We all off to vets later for a check up, mum needs lots of building up now after her ordeal, so i am feeding every few hours puppy mash with plenty of water, that way i know she getting her fluids, she is lapping it up every meal, poor thing must have been so full of dead/live babies, plus lots of the discharge, couldn't eat enough, i can see a slight improvement already in just a couple of days, so i know we are heading in right direction, wound is fine nice and dry. so i have no worries at moment, thank you all for your info and advice, i have read things of here many times but never actually used the site, its fab and lots of very experienced pet owners with bags of knowledge, which i love to learn from.

Don't forget to start nipping back pups nails from about four days, they grow fast and will need doing weekly.
