Ok... Just a quick poll question to get to know my fellow posters a bit better ;)
Which breed would you pick if your favorite breed was no longer available for some reason?
Just curious if people then to stick to the same breed groups or would choose something completely different.
For myself, my second choice after the GSD would probably be a rottweiler or Dobermann.. *shrug* what can I say,
I like my dogs to be like me: Headstrong! ;p
So people come round and tell about your choice of dog and why!
:)

Okay! I have dalmatians. If they weren't available it would have to be black labradors (there's a cracker on p71 of March Your Dog!) or cocker spaniels.

That's right, Fiona! I was thinking faster than I typed :p

For me it would be an IW or a Leonberger .....I used to have an IW many , many years ago and she was wonderful , love the breed and I met a couple of Leonbergers the other week and was struck by how happy and gorgeous they were .
Mel :) - I have a Malamute :)

Rough Collies have always had a place in my heart I adore them.
Alison :) I have a dobermann and neapolitan mastiff

Excellent choice, Alison :D - for me, was determined that when I lost my two 'originals' I wasn't going to have another Rough Collie, and after consideration and research I decided on an Italian Spinone (although love Border Terriers too).
However, when the first of the two oldies went, I knew I'd desperately miss the Collies, so will now always have them as the main breed - but who knows what might join them later?

of course I wouldnt be without my border 'terror' but I have a soft spot for Border Collies as I grew up with them, and I also think that mini Schnauzer look like little bundles of fun

Until we got our new pup I always thought that cockers would be my first breed. Since we got Lara though she's now my first choice breed (working bearded collie) and the cocker is my second choice.
I won't get another cocker unless working beardies become extinct as the beardies are everything I'm looking for in dog.
sorry Holly :(

Ive had bull terriers all my life. 1st choice the APBT. (can no longer own one) 2nd choice the ISBT. 3rd choice if I could no longer have one of these I would probably look at importing another molosser type breed from abroad.
Mick
My second choice after GSD's would be Rott's, too :)

If I couldn't have the Danes, I would have to have a Rotti (lost my only Rotti to cancer nine years ago, and it still hurts :( ) or an Akita. It would be difficult to find another dog with as little brain as a Dane, so I'd go for brawn instead :D :D
Grace

Aww Grace, all but one of yours are girls, aren't they - next to the Dane boys, they're positively intelligent!! Wait until you've got a few more boys .......... :D
What are you going to keep from Maggie?

Ah, now theres' a question ;)
They said it would be easier when the litters in front of you all the time, but I've only narrowed it down to three :D (there's four in the litter) The boy tempts me as I wouldn't have seasons etc to worry about (like not being out of the ring!), but the two brindle girls are very nice. I may run on two, but have to convince hubby it's the best idea :)

A decent brindle boy could give you a lot of fun in the Colour League, not many brindles about at the moment. Not sure about not worrying about seasons - with 2 or 3 entire girls in the house, you'd be panicking rather than worrying :D
Always said I'd never keep a boy, but do have a bit of a hankering at the moment ....... bet I'd regret it though.
Keep the two brindles and make sure Ross never sees them together, he might think you've only got one!!

Now marina, i know he's gullible but he's not that bad :D
I will more than likely keep the boy as like you say there isn't much else about, mind you there's not that many nice brindles of any sex IMO
Don't worry I'll keep you informed :)

I would have a Dobermann - love them, or a long haired Alaskan Malamute, saw one at the sled dog races at Aviemore, and it was the most beautiful dog I have ever seen.
Weimaraners will always be my first love :-) I would love to own a Bracco but that's not likely to happen for some time so if I were to suddenly decide to get another dog but not a Weimar it would probably be a GSP or GWP, however I do like Border Terriers too :D

I have always had border collies, and then bought a yorkie terrier for my gran over 9 years ago. Gran died, yorkie came to live with me till he died last October. We now have another yorkie pup, so guess this is my 2nd fav breed, after the border collie (I still have one, she is my 4th)

Long Haired Mal .... *shudder*

Love big dogs but gone for labrador because house just isnt big enough for anything bigger.
So if could choose without restrictions would go for Newfoundland or Akita.
Absolutely love Newfs. they seem like such teddy bears.

I have chinese cresteds at the moment and I'm afraid I've got used to a lack of hair in the house, so I'd opt for a mexican hairless.

Hehe, you have got 100 points :D.

I want a Tibetan Mastiff. I've known two that come to work with their owner and they are gorgeous! But hubby won't have one - he likes his dogs to look like dogs, not fluffy bears!

If I couldn't (God forbid) have an Alaskan Malamute, I would choose either a Japanese Akita or a Hungarian Vizsla. If by any chance I became unable to have a large dog, I would go for a Basenji ( I love their little faces and characters).

I have a Cairn terrier right now (2nd time) .. on my wish list are:
GSDs (have had two in the past, so regal and so beautiful moving I am in awe)
Yorkshire Terriers (make my heart turn to mush, my late Yorkie was the love of my life)
Boston Terrier (had one many years ago, briefly, thanks husband #1 shameful impulse purchase at a pet store)
... and have longed for the following breeds: Boxer, Tibetan Terrier, Hungarian Visla, Standard Poodle, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Spanish Water Dog ... and others too numerous to mention. But .. I will mention Australian Shepherd .. gosh, they are lookers!

If I couldn't have a mal, it would have to be a pyrenean mountain dog.I have very fond childhood memories of one that belonged to family friends. What can I say, you could lock me in a room with any number of large breeds and I'd love every minute of doggy antics. Put me in a room with just one potential ankle biter and I'd be abit wary.....

Nothing beats the loving feeling you get from two huge furry paws on your shoulders and a big slobber on your face :D Or rolling around playing chase me/no you chase me in the fields. I like a dog that you can enjoy long walks with. It's important to have a dog large enough to double up as a footrest :D Besides I could make loads of jumpers from the hair that would come off a pyrenean mountain dog.....Mother in Law would love all those xmas pressies :D

Count me in on a Leonberger too - once I turned my back for 5 minutes on [water baby] corgi puppy and next thing I know he is wading into my friend's pond up to his neck. Leonberger in residence proceeded immediately [with no prompting] to jump in and rescue puppy from the pond even though he wasn't drowning - I was so impressed and Leo in question is now embarassed by the big squishy hugs he gets every time I see him.
Samoyed is probably next on list.

Well, first love was the Lab - and I STILL love them to bits - then came the Aussies - who have completely stolen our hearts (and one of my slippers - will either Beau Piddley or Venus please own up and give it back :-) ) but a third breed???
I think it would be the Leo - I just Lurve Kathie & Pete's leos - Hunter just lollops up the hall stretches up & nearly knocks my glasses off with his tongue! - and I'm not that short (5ft 5ins). I love the look of the lighter - almost daffodil yellow - ones too!
Mind you, the idea was that the Aussies are slightly smaller than the Labs, so that as we get older, they are still manageable!
Margot (still hunting for 1 slipper)

Mine would be a huge huge change i have newfs but i really have fallen for smooth coated Chihuahua's
I think that they are so gormless with those big foreheads and huge eyes, i would love to have one , but not at the moment maybe when i am old and cannot handle a newf anymore.
