Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / My dog's got the hump
- By goat Date 19.06.15 18:12 UTC
Ummmmmm my wire haired dachshund is now 6 months and he has started humping, he is not neutered and he humps other dogs in the park on whatever part of the body he can get hold of and he is humping his bed.  He also pees when he gets excited when we pet him.  I know that his hormones are kicking in but I would like to know if the humping and peeing will settle down or whether neutering would stop this behaviour?
I wanted to wait till he was fully grown because he is a long backed breed and I had thought that neutering an achondroplastic breed before fully grown could inhibit their bone development.
I would be really grateful for advice.  Thank you.

Yes it will settle with time and appropriate training/socialisation  I would wait until he's mature (physically and mentally) before considering castration.

So far my boy hasn't been much of a humper!  If his pet bed held up he may very rarely try a lazy attempt. (touch wood - gently pats head) He is only 22 months will he develop this trait? Or are we safe?

At his age you should be safe now, I would say.

Will the peeing when stroked also settle?

it sounds to be more due to excitement than directed sexually based behaviour.

At this age he has several times the amount of testosterone that he will have once mature -which is why he will be OTT now, and why too many people give up and neuter at 6 months. Get through the next few months and the levels will drop again.

Thank you so much I will persevere I don't want to have him neutered if everything will settle down and in general he is such a good boy
