Hi My gsp girl is due to be spayed on Wednesday. She at the best of times is a real licker and wondered if a medical pet shirt would protect her surgical stitches and prevent any infection. Has anyone used one? http://www.dfordog.co.uk/medical-pet-shirts.html  Thanks

I've not used them and have a smaller breed - but I had my westie spayed recently and although she was really good so I didn't need to put a cone on her - I bought  a (bright pink)  cheap stretchy childrens boob-tube top (don't get me started on how such a thing shouldn't even exist) from primark I think and put that over her tummy for walks and overnight - it worked well - so I would've thought a proper dog suit would work well. Hopefully someone on here has used them and can help more.

Hi tinar. I've thought of adapting a t shirt or even making an under body kind of covering with Velcro straps. But being a girlie fuss pot I'm sure she would think of a way of getting it off. These properly made medical shirts seem to be secure enough to out-fox any dog! I also thought the £20 ish spend is worth it. I'm positive she would not endure an e collar and this looks like it would ensure adequate protection whilst out on lead walks. Thanks for your prompt reply.

The dog shirt looks good to me - if I had seen it before I probably would've bought one - they look pretty hard to get out of as long as they fit well and aren't loose. I found with my girl that the spay stitches didn't itch for her in the way I expected them to and they heeled really quick - ended up just really being about 4 days of being super careful; though she did sleep most of the first 2 days it has to be said!  Hopefully your gal will barely notice too.

For Chihuahuas I've used baby grows in the past.  Leaving one press stud undone between the legs to allow urination.

Hi tinar..just an update...my girl has had her op...and would you believe she has not even as much as looked at her stitches! I bought a medical dog shirt (just in case) but much to my delight she didn't need it! The main concern was the sensitivity to the anesthetic, as she took a really long time to wake up! We've had one bad night and one bad day whilst the after effects of the anesthetic  wore off. Thanks once again for your input. Phew.... So glad she's over that ordeal,.. Now we can get on with life!

So glad for you Saga. My girl has been spayed and then immediately had a cataracts op and one thing I now know for certain - with these two operations anyway - it is far worse for us, the owners, as onlookers, than it seems to be for them!!!
