I was just wondering what can be done if anything to combat constipation in my week old puppies. Not all of them but a lot. I am dealing with it but wondered if there was anything they can have or if a change needs to be given to the bitch in her diet to help combat this.
I have to stimulate them as she won't clean their poo, wee yes but not poo. I tried butter on their bums and she licks this off and when one poo'd she turned her head away and wouldn't touch it.
Anyway any advice on this would be grand, they are 7 days old

Your bitch must be related to one we had who would happily pee them, but anything more was totally beneath madam, and as a result the puppies were very uncomfortable. I've heard about mineral oil but that didn't work and I ended up sitting mine in a bowl of luke-warm water in the hope of getting things moving ..... eventually gravity prevailed. You might try the warm rear-end bath?
You are probably already doing this but try using a cotton wool pad in soaked in warm water.
Could the pups be slightly dehydrated maybe? If you pinch the skin above the neck does it spring back down quickly? Could the box be too warm? ust thinking out loud...these would be the first things I'd check.

It's safe to give them a few drops of Lactulose, from a syringe if they are being fed by mum or mixed with their milk if being hand reared.

They are hydrated as do check for that and keep adjusting the temp in the room according to the weather as it is warm and muggy outside.
I have been soaking them with water and do get it out of them but wish it were easier, some pups are fine and it comes out easily.
Lactulose I will look into, if it helps they can have that syringed into their mouths.
Thanks
She is a madam and while she should be doing all the hard work I feel I am as she is also very clumsy :-/
Thanks from a very sleep deprived lady!!

I had to toilet all of mine this time, she would clean and make wee, but she just didn't stimulate them long enough to make them poo. After I'd got rid of the back log I would make sure they all went once a day until they started pooing on their own. It was a God awful task as I was suffering from morning sickness at the time, but after nearly losing one of the pups from constipation at 5 days, I just wasn't going to trust that mum was doing the job. I ended up getting my non-doggy husband to do the poo instead (his first litter and I think he thought it would be all cute puppies and cuddles- he is now demanding no more litters).

I'm beginning to think myself lucky! I don't even see a poo with my breed. Mum is already there and clearing up as it's happening.

ditto, I have occasionally had a Mum in first few days be a bit slapdash and had to follow up with wet wipes
