My son took his girl to be scanned today after having only slip matings. However the vet said he just couldnt decide if she was because although he saw something it was extremely small and has asked him to come back in a few days time for a 2nd scan but seems to think if she is its a small litter.she wasnt blood tested this time before mating and is on day 33 from a middle mating of 3.Are small litters more difficult to detect? My son thoought she definately wasnt pregnant because was showing no signs at all.Has anyone had a maby or a no but then told at a 2nd scan they are infact pregnant?

Our bitch was scanned day 36, but we did get a tie in between two slip matings and u could see clearly 4 pups. Someone with more experience will certainly be able to give their experiences.HTH

I would get a second opinion, pups can be seen clearly from day 28 by experienced scaners. Not all vets are good scanners, look for someone in your area who specializes in pregnancy ultrasound. x

The same vet scanned his other girl at 27 days and clearly saw pups so my son is very confused as to why its inconclusive when this girl is further on.The other girl had 8 pups and was a slimmer build so maby this has something to do with it or maby she just isnt pregnnt, next scan is on thursday.

I have a breed that carries high up under the ribs which won't be picked up by a scan. I've actually watched pups move down the day before whelping.

she was scanned during her last litter around day 30 and clearly saw pups( different vet ) apart from being slimmer i cant think why this time would be any different. Can a dog carry under the ribs with one litter and not the other?she was clearly showing and actng pregnant this time last litter.

Most definitely. This was my top bitch and she had 3 litters. Always 2 pups each time. It was the middle litter that she carried so high and it looked really odd to see everything rippling as they moved down.

Possibility of reabsorption but then the vet should be able to see this too
