Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / should I treat as phantom or possibly pregnant?
- By gsdowner Date 11.05.15 14:57 UTC
As mentioned a few weeks ago now, my girl went to the stud during her season and stayed for 4 days. There was no tie but one slip tie and lots of ladder climbing.

We consoled ourselves and thought about trying next time.

Since then, the bitch has been behaving differently. She is off her food, picky and choosy about when and how much she eats, demanding affection, climbing on furniture, trying to sleep on the bed, sniffing around the dining table at meal times and eating grass. Her nipples seem pinker but not enlarged, there was no clear discharge, vulva back to normal size and no vomiting.

We decided not to scan as like mamabas says, there's no guarantee but then should I treat this as a phantom and be firm or should I treat as possibly pregnant and just sit tight? If she is, then according to debbie jenson, the pups would be fully formed by now from embryo stage.

Any ideas?

I would want to know, if she is yes there is a chance of reabsorption still but at least you know and can start preparing for a litter, if she isn't then you can carry on regardless.
My girl had a scan at 4 weeks and will be rescanned at 5 weeks to see where we are.

I would just sit tight for the moment. It's possible that she is pregnant but you wouldn't really know by this stage as it is still early. You won't need to increase food or treat her any differently for another few weeks anyway. Having a scan isn't a bad idea especially if you're a novice, as you'll want to know if there's a chance you have a singleton.

The litter she had before she came to me was small for her breeed. She had 4 with only 2 survivors.  She would be 5 weeks pregnant now if she is....or just shy of it if I go by date of last attempt by stud. So could possibly have her scanned. One of the reasons we didn't is that my scanner doesn't drive and its a fair way to go if it might stress my girl out enough to absorb....I'm so torn...I don't mind sitting tight but don't want to pamper the diva behaviour if she isn't. Her weight is spot on and she is still leaving some of her breakfast everyday so not overly worried about that side of things. My contract ends this side of half term so I will be home and have everything ready to hand if it turns out she is, so no need to panic there neither.....

Ok beginning to wonder now...my girl is going upstairs, hiding by side of bed and scratching the carpet. Have brought her down stairs and set up a dark corner for her, she has dug up the bed and then settled on the sofa. Nose has small droplets of clear water, general shallow breathing, much more than the other dogs... no discharge of any kind, belly is still normal though did feel a little tight (cramp like) just before posting. Trudy is coming thursday...soonest she could do. Is resting as a type.

So did you end up with any pups OP?

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, just seen this.

No, sadly she didn't have any pups. She went through some of the motions for labour. Went on for about 4 or 5 hours and then she just settled down and forgot all about it.

May be next season...different stud dog.

So sorry but wishing you the best of luck next season.
