Can anyone tell me if cherries are poisonous to dogs? Not fully formed one's but the little buds from the trees.
We have a lot of cherry trees round here, the blossom has finished and the little buds are forming.  My eldest dog (the snaffler) has taken an interest in them on our walks, he never has before.
Thanks.

As far as I am aware all parts (including leaves etc) of a cherry tree are toxic to dogs and cats the seeds containing cyanide. We know the same of apple seeds, but don't panic if your dog has just eaten one or two, it would probably take a good few to begin to cause any damage, I would stop your dog from eating them if you can though, no point in tempting fate, if the leave command does not stop him, is it possible to distract him whilst passing the trees or pop a ball in his mouth?

Thanks Carrington,
I kept giving him the "leave it" command this morning, which seemed to work.  As he's a coated breed, it's always hard to tell if he's just sniffing and rolling them around or if he's actually eaten any.
What would the symptoms be if he was affected by them?

Hi Whatdog,

The common symptoms will be: Anxiety, respiratory problems, (being the first thing you may notice as cyanide prevents oxygen from circulation at a cellular level) staggering, convulsions, collapse and death. There is a very small window to get your pet to the vet for an antidote once the symptoms begin, but as already said, your dog would need to take in quite an amount to stop his body from counteracting the small amounts of cyanide,

Unfortunately, you say there are a lot of cherry trees around your area, just make sure they don't become a play thing for him, I know it can be hard when our dogs spend their lives with noses to the ground, but do your best to keep him on you and something else whilst passing the trees.

Peach and nectarine stones also poisonous. I used to compost them before we got a dog they now go straight in the rubbish

My neighbour lost her boy because unbeknown to her he'd eaten a nectarine stone whilst over the park on his morning walk. That was 5yrs ago now but it devastated her so much that she hasn't had another dog since. Extremely sad.
