They work like disposable nappies. Be careful though because if they're anything like disposable nappies they contain chemical gels which swell up and hold the urine.
I know of a dog that was very ill having eaten an unused disposable nappy as the gel swelled up in his stomach and he nearly died :(
I use cloth nappies in the puppies pen and they're a lot better than the pet mats - cheaper as well!! The urine soaks into the nappy and the puppy can't come to anyharm with chewing it.

Hi, thanks for the replies, never had a problem with them shredding. The ones I had were ultra thin and contained no bleach as they were white and didn't have any gel beads from what I remember however were quite absorbant.I just use to place 2 near the back door, then they were placed outside for a few days and bingo .
Took obviously longer at night I use to slip 1 in at the other end of the dogcrate ,then one night left it out stretch the bedding across the whole crate and she never wet the bed and went straight to the back door.So i'm living in hope we can do it again. But then again like children you never get 2 the same and i'll probably have to have a rethink!:-D
Regards Briony
I use pampers care mats as puppy pads, they come in small or large size, small are £4.99 for 12, and can be got from any supermarket. :)

I believe Pampers care mats do contain the silicon gel which swells, so not a good idea if pup is inclined to chew.......

I found that my pup thought these were great to rip up and shred everywhere. She also couldn't read the package to know what they were for !!!!!!!!
